I've had the printer for a couple of years and have printed and scanned successfully.
Now I can print but when I try to scan I get message "HP Envy 5640 series not found".
Ran Print and Scan Doctor. Hangs on Windows (WIA) scan.
I've disconnected the printer from power and computer - no effect.
From the printer I can copy OK but if I try scan to computer I get a message "Computer not found"

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to be so long before coming back to you but I have only just found the time to check your response.
I followed your suggestion but found some difficulties which I have marked below:
Perform root level uninstallation to remove all the printer related software's.
- In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
- Select your HP printer.
- Select Uninstall.
- In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
- In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
- Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
- Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
- Click on Drivers tab.
- Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom. MY COMMENT: I was offered the choice of removing either the Driver OR the Driver and driver package, I selected just Driver
- Select OK.MY COMMENT: Windows refused to remove the driver saying the printer was in use. I closed all programs and restarted the PC. Then it removed the driver.
- Remove all instances of the same.
- Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
- Close Devices and Printers.
- Restart the PC again.

I established a connection via USB but it refused to allow me to connect wirelessly - not too worried about this.
When I tried to scan I got the same response as before. I went to the internet and searched for a solution to HP scanner WIA not working and came up with a post on a Microsoft forum which included the following advice. This is similar to the suggestion you made before but included turning Shell Hardware Detection (SHD) to Manual. I did this but had to stop SDH before I could set it to manual and then re-start it.
Restart the Dependencies services.
- Click on Start, in Search box type “services” without quotes.
- Scroll down until you see Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double click on it and go to the tab called Dependencies.
- 2 services should be listed.
- Exit that window and look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
- Make sure it’s on manual or if it is on Auto, just leave it. Make sure the service is started though.
- Go to Shell Hardware Detection and Double click.
- Set the Start up Type as Manual and hit Apply.
- You should be able to start the service by hitting Start. Check with the issue.
The scan worked after this. I restarted the PC and it still worked. so finally, I hope, success. I shall keep a copy of your advice and the Restart Dependencies advice in case (when) it happens again.

Welcome to HP support community.
Check Windows Image Acquisition settings
In Windows, search for and open View local services.
In the Services window, scroll down the list and find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
Look at the Status and Startup Type values.
If the status is Started or Running and the Startup Type is Automatic, WIA is running correctly. Skip to the next step.
If the status is Disabled or no status displays, right-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), click Properties, click the General tab, select Automatic from the Startup type dropdown menu, and then click Start.
If the Start button is grayed out, go back to the Services menu, make sure Remote Procedure Call, Shell Hardware Detection, RPC Endpoint Mapper, and DCOM Server Process Launcher are running and set as Automatic, and then start WIA.

Sandytechy20, thanks for replying.
I'm sure I've followed a sequence similar to your suggestion in the past and it worked fine. However this time not so good.
I located the services and checked WIA - it was running and automatic.
Checked the other services you mentioned and they were all running and automatic as well.
Returned to WIA: tuned it from automatic to disabled and back. Wouldn't allow me to STOP WIA from running.
Tried Print and Scan Doctor again and it just hung on checking WIA.
