Printer: HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw (4PA42A) , connected and reachable over my network.
Windows: 10 Home 1909 (OS Build 18363.657).
Install the full software pack (LJM148M149_UWWL_4-1_Full_WebPack_44.5.2693) and all additional software, including Readiris. Yes , I did download the appropriate software for my device, multiple times.
3 HP scan programs are avaialble after installation:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP LaserJet Pro M148f-M149f\bin\hpscan.exe 44.5.2693.19162
- Windows app HP Scan and Capture 40.0.245.0 ;
- Windows app HP Smart 110.1.671.0
Whichever bit or Readiris I start (readiris.exe or regipe.exe) , it stears me towards registration, which is succesful, so apparently Readiris does see I have a HP Laserjet Pro MFP...:
Printing and scanning works, but hpscan.exe fails to start, and hp smart and hp scan and capture do not create searchable PDF files. I.R.I.S. nor Readiris software appears to be performing OCR.
I have done multiple clean installs, followed https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/quot-not-found-quot-error-message-when-try... . To no avail.
The printer assistant is not showing a scan option, is that a clue to something ?
Running the HP Print and Scan Doctor reports no trouble found, but the test scan fails in a similar way as running hpscan.exe by hand:
I have tested with tweaking the c:\windows\twain_32\HP Laserjet PRO M148f-M149f\scanapp.ini file, to change "HP LJ Pro M148fM149f into something matching the created printername, that did not fix it either.
Anyone got this to work ? I am at a loss what to do, local support suggest to return the printer to get it replaced, which seems not the solution to me.....
Thanks in advance for your support, looking forward to your solution.
Kind regards,
René Fennet

Welcome to HP support community.
Did you uninstall the printer driver from root level and then uninstall the driver?
If not, Perform root level uninstallation to remove all the printer related software's.
- In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
- Select your HP printer.
- Select Uninstall.
- In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
- In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
- Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
- Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
- Click on Drivers tab.
- Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
- Select OK.
- Remove all instances of the same.
- Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
- Close Devices and Printers.
- Restart the PC again.
Download and install printer full feature driver
Click here to download the driver.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi Sandyetechy20,
Yes , I have done an uninstall of the printer driver from root level and an uninstall off the driver, and a reboot, and a new download and install. Multiple times, following the instructions you posted, I already got those from the post I mentioned of your collegue KrazyToad.
Please engage next level support.
Kind regards,
