HP LaserJet Pro MFP M277c6
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My HP LaserJet Pro MFP M277c6 has worked flawlessly for 6-months providing low-volume printing and scanning.

Recently, without any system software updates, the scanning feature no longer responds.  Using the desktop "HP CLJM277" icon generates instead a "scanner communication cannot be established" error.  Printing still works properly and I can still use the touchscreen on the printer to scan to the computer laying a master on the glass platter. In this mode, the document feeder is not an option and it will not provide pdf scans.  The printer is connected via an ethernet cable.

I downloaded the HP Scan Doctor 5.0 and installed and ran which produced the following results:

  • Performed complete Software/driver removal and new installation
  • Device Manager OK
  • Device Status OK
  • Windows (WIA) Scan Reports problem and suggests new software install again. <skip>
  • HP Twain Scan Reports scanner communication cannot be established.
  • HP Scan OK.
  • Test Scan Reports scanner communication cannot be established.

Any help would be appreciated.  TIA

David

Hello, @dresslered

Thanks for the update!

This could be an issue with WIA component. Let's try to uninstall the printer again. Use Microsoft Fix It tool to uninstall the printer. Get the tool here: Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

Download the tool and use the tool to uninstall the printer. Restart the POC once done.

Now, verify the following OS services are enabled:

  1. Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open
  2. Type services.msc and click OK.
  3. Locate the 'Shell Hardware Detection' in the list. If it is not enabled/started, make sure to enable/start the service. Also, make sure the Startup Type set as Automatically from its properties.
  4. Locate the 'Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)' in the list. If it is not enabled/started, make sure to enable/start the service. Also, make sure the Startup Type set as Automatically as well
  5. Locate the 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)' in the list. Perform the same steps as above.
  6. Restart the PC.

Now, click on http://hp.care/2s9Ixwa to download and install the printer drivers and then try scanning using the HP Scan software.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂

Hello, @dresslered - Greetings!

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!  It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel!

Going through your post, I understand that you are not able to scan from your PC while scanning from the printer control panel works fine. Do not worry I’m here to help 🙂

It certainly does look like an issue with the printer drivers installed on the PC. Try the steps below to reinstall the drivers and to fix the issue:

  • Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
  • Go to Control Panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP LaserJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click on http://hp.care/2s9Ixwa to download and install the printer drivers.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome!

Good luck 🙂

Thank you  for the suggestion.  I've already tried reinstalling ALL software and drivers.  I thought that my first post explained the steps that I have taken.  A co-worker of mine said that the same thing happened to his HP printer (although it was another model number) and said that even HP tech support could not resolve the issue.

I forgot to add that my printer is connected directly to my computer via ethernet cable.

Dvortex,

You're a genius!  Thank you for you help.  "accepted Solutiohn" and "Thumbs Up"!

For my case, it was the 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)' that had to be started and set to Automatic.  Not sure why these settings had changed because the printer had worked flawlessly.  Thanks again,

David
