With a Linux OS, the <Simple Scan> does not detect this printer. The scan source defaults to the Pro 8500 printer and can not be changed. The HP directory of available HP printers does not even list the Pro 8710 thereon. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi GrumpyUA,
Thanks for the response. I have Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit OS, Version 3.6.6 and Kernal 4.10.0-38-generic.
The built-in app is called "Simple Scan," version 3.20.0 by Robert Ancell. Hope this helps.

Good evening AgNut,
I am using Linux Mint 18.2 as well as Ubuntu 16.4. I never really had any luck using Simple Scan. Just out of curiosity I just tried using it again with my HP-6700 All in One. Still doesn't work. Just doesn't see the printer.
My system is set up with the HP software HPLIP-3.16.3 version (for printer maintenance). Further, I installed XSane scanning Software Version 0.999 to replace Simple Scan.
With this configuration I am able to scan directly from XSane with no problems. I have been using this configuration for a long time with no problems whatsoever.
By the way, XSane has numerous settings and configuration changes that can be made from within the software that Simple Scan doesn't have.
I sure hope this helps you out of your conundrum.
Good luck
