HP Officejet 5740
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I have a new printer.  It worked fine for the first couple of weeks.

Now I can print but when I try to scan from an application I get the message

"HP TWAIN   The HP Officejet 5740 series was not found"

I tried stopping and restarting the WIA service as was recommended in some other posts.

The error message that I get is

"Error 1061 The service cannot accept control messages at this time".

I have also tried the HP Scan tool but it gets stuck (for days) at the point where it scans for the WIA.

Any suggestions on what to try next??????

Thanks in advance.

Hello @BBDURKI4, Greetings!

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums! It is a great platform to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others.

I understand you are getting a “TWAIN” error while scanning. I will certainly do my best to help you fix this issue.

Let’s first try to fix this issue using HP Print and Scan Doctor (PSDR). PSDR is an automated tool which can diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. Please go to http://hp.care/2bZ9w2q to download and run HP PSDR.

Once you open the program, click on “Fix scanning” to try and get this issue fixed.

PS: If you have an important document to scan and if the issue is still not fixed, try using “MS Paint” application to scan. Once you open the “Paint” application, go to File and choose “From scanner or camera” to complete your scans.

Let me know how that goes. Good luck!

Cheers 🙂

Thanks for the suggestion DVortex, but unfortunately it did not work.

I downloaded the HP Print and Scan Doctor and then ran it.  It does fine until it gets to the line item for WIA ... it hangs up on that piece.  I even let it run over night to see if it could work through it, but no luck.   So I've not been able to get to the end of running that tool to see where the problem lies.  And I have run the tool multiple times, all with the same result.

I've also deleted and reinstalled the printer many times but that didn't work either.

Because it worked previously (for the first few weeks), I'm guessing that it was "messed up" by one of the automatic Windows updates that have taken place.  But I can't be sure on that either.

Again, all suggestions are appreciated.

Hello @BBDURKI4

Thank you for your reply.

Please try the steps mentioned below:

  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.
  • Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.
  • Now scroll down to “Shell Hardware Detection” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”
  • Now scroll to Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and restart the service.

If you are still getting the error, the issue is likely with the operating system. You will have to reset / restore your OS.

Let me know how it goes. Good luck!

Cheers 🙂
