Officejet Pro 8600 Wireless
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Have had my Officejet 8600 Pro Wireless for some time, without issues. But now I've switched antivirus software from AVG to Bitdefender, and all of a sudden I cannot scan anymore. Printing works fine, but scanning does not.

Disabling the firewall in Bitdefender solves the issue, so I know that's where I'll need to add exceptions for the scan-software/connections. I just don't know exactly what to do - I do know how to do it in Bitdefender, but I'm not sure what to let through/give access to.

My questions are:

What files should I allow access through the firewall, which are the files activated during a wireless scan?

How do I find necessary incoming adresses/IP:s to allow them access?

As I understand the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Wireless scanner feature is being blocked by the  Bitdefender,

Don't worry as I have a few steps to help you out:

To clarify, it had been working fine without these issues while you had been using the AVG? is that right?

In the meantime, here's an article with the details on Configuring BitDefender Internet Security for Compatibility with Networked Printers:

Hello Riddle_Decipher

The solution worked perfectly, and I can now scan again. Thank you!

The only thing I can add is that on the new Bitdefender 2017 doesn't exactly have the required menues as described in your link, as the instructions there defer to older versions of Bitdefender.

Correct way to find them on Bitdefender 2017 is like this (I used 2013 version as base):

  1. Click the BitDefender icon in the lower right corner of the computer screen (the notification area), or click the shortcut on your desktop to open the BitDefender Internet Security 2017 control window.
  2. Click View Modules. The Protection Modules window displays.
  3. Click the settings cog on Firewall module, and then choose the Adapters tab.
  4. Choose the WiFi adapter, and change Network Type to Trusted using the drop-down menu.
  5. Close the BitDefender window (there is no Save-button).
  6. Turn off your printer, wait 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.
  7. Restart your computer.
Important: You must restart your computer in order for your changes to take effect.

Again, thank you for your help, have a good one!

Hello Riddle_Decipher

Long time, no see - which is good as I only com here when I have an issue  😃

Bitdefender has now updated to 2018 version, and of course the issues with scanning popped up again - I guess the settings were reset on updating. So I had to redo the exception, and in doing so I saw that a few things had changed, so I wanted to update the instruction here.

Correct way to fix scan issues over Wi-Fi with Bitdefender 2018 is like this (changes in bold😞

  1. Click the BitDefender icon in the lower right corner of the computer screen (the notification area), or click the shortcut on your desktop to open the BitDefender Internet Security 2018 control window.
  2. Click View Features. The Protection Features window displays.
  3. Click the settings cog on Firewall feature, and then choose the Network Adapters tab.
  4. Choose the WiFi adapter, and change Network Type to Home/Office using the drop-down menu.
  5. Close the BitDefender window (there is no Save-button).
  6. Turn off your printer, wait 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.
  7. Restart your computer.
Important: You must restart your computer in order for your changes to take effect.

To be entirely truthful, I did not need to restart neither computer nor printer for it to work, but I am leaving the instruction in there because re-starts are the prudent thing to do in cases like this.

Have a good one!
