HP Officejet Pro 9132e - BW scan option in HP SMART App missing

Hi, I want to scan my documents in simple black-white (BW) mode, but in HP Smart App I can only choose between color and greyscale. This make the scan file size much larger without any need.

I bought this HP high-end printer to really have all-in-one, but how can it be that this simple BW option is missing? Is there any chance to add this option, because otherwise this is embarrassing for this HP printer.

Welcome to the HP Community --

The printer is not aware of what it is printing or scanning.

How content is scanned or imported and / or printed is dependent on the application or software you use to configure the task.

HP provides one of these applications -- HP Smart 

HP Smart (Windows) includes a Filter option to force the scan into Black / White mode.

Example

Open HP Smart

Select Scan > Set Presets to Photo

Adjust settings and Scan

Edit / Correct the edges = Full

Select to Edit the content

Select Filters and B/W 2

Done

Select next action (for example, Save, Share)

thanks for your reply. I agree with you: it's not a printer issue, but fact is, the printer is asking to install HP Smart App, so it comes as a bundle to the customer. But right, I think the hardware is really powerful and I'm blaming only the software "Smart App" here  😉 

I know this "edit -> filter" option, but please correct if I'm wrong, but you have to apply this filter for every single scanned page again, what is really annoying and time consuming, when I scan a document with several pages. 

Why HP is so reluctant to implement a simple third scan option "bw" and even proposing a much more complicated workaround?

I was convinced of HP printers for decades (and I'm still convinced of the HP hardware by the way), but if HP offers such a software, I've the look for options in the future. I really hope that HP is listening to their costumers and improve the software to the customer needs.

The following is conjecture -

HP Smart is meant to be a multi-platform application.  It's designed to function in different environments found in different printer models.  It was never meant as a model specific answer for customized print and scanning needs.  The application does not include the concept of custom shortcuts.

Should you have it installed, HP Smart Printing can be used with HP Smart to extend the application's capabilities.    HP Smart Printing works with Word and Adobe Reader, too. 

This is not scan software -- 

HP Smart Printing can be used to print previously saved PDF and Photo content as you want it done.

HP Smart Printing prevents conflict errors by only allowing compatible settings to be used together.

HP Smart Printing understands the concepts of Custom Presets (Shortcuts), Custom Paper Sizes, and Watermarks.

Should you be running a supported version of Windows,

If you wish to do so,

Install the Full Driver Printer Software.

The full driver is designed to be product specific, that is, the software is meant to support your printer.

The full driver includes HP Scan.

HP Scan understands Custom Shortcuts.

While not all settings can be added to a Custom Shortcut, many can -- it's perhaps worth the time to check.

This printer also supports the newer format HP Universal Scan Software

HP Universal Scan is similar to HP Scan with a few added features not found in the original software.

HP Universal Scan understands the concept of creating and using Custom Shortcuts.

Uninstall existing printer software

• Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
• If your printer includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
• Restart the computer and log in.

• If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

Installation of the HP Universal Scan Software adds an "HP Scan" self-named shortcut icon to the Desktop.

NOTE

If you have installed the full driver printer software,

And

If the HP Scan that is installed is the "new format" (larger GUI and new layout),

Then

In general, you perhaps do not need to install HP Universal Scan -- the version of HP Scan that installs with the software for this printer is a functional match to the HP Universal Software.

That said, if you can't stand it for any reason, the system will tolerate installing both the full driver and the HP Universal Scan software.

Dear Dragon-Fur,

again thank you and I really appreciate your support, but sorry to say, this was not was I'm looking for.

My use-case: I need to scan BW documents in searchable PDF form in a adequate file size.

And as I bought my new HP printer, I never could imagine this can be a problem, as it is a very common task and my previous HP printer was able to it. But now with HP Smart App I can scan as searchable PDF, but not in BW, what make the file size of my scans very large. After I tried a lot in HP Smart App I then downloaded the "HP Universal Scan - Full Feature Software and Driver" and was first happy to see that it's supporting BW scan. But my frustration cam back, when I wanted to store my document and then saw that there the "searchable PDF" is not supported. 😞 

In fact I spend several hours already, even had a call with support, but they also couldn't solve my problem. I never thought that a mighty software called "Smart App" does not support such a basic feature like BW scan.

Does HP have a ticket system, where I can file a ticket to implement BW scan in Smart App, should be an easy task and would improve the App as well as HP customers need, right?

It does appear you have an additional question -- Searchable PDF format

Smart Advance

Searchable PDF is a premium scan feature available in HP+ enabled printers and select non-HP+ printers.

Searchable PDF is not directly related to BW scan options, though there might be a way to combine the two features.

When HP+ is enabled --

HP Smart can combine the two features Scan > Edit > Filter > Black/White with an HP Smart Shortcut to Save the content as Searchable PDF.  

True -- You might not care for the answer or the additional complexity.   😐 

Nonetheless, the following is an honest attempt to explain.

EWS - Scan to Network Folder - Quick Sets / Default Job Options

The printer supports the EWS feature Scan > Scan to Network folder

• Job Options >> EWS > Scan > Scan to Network Folder > Default Job Options
• Default Job Options include a Color Mode choice:  Color, Grayscale, Black Only
• Scan to Network folder includes four format choices:  JPEG, PDF, TIFF, PDF/A
• Scan to Network folder might not include Searchable PDF.   

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Scan > Scan to Network Folder > Default Job Options

and

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Quick Sets > Add / Edit / Copy / Delete Quick Set Profile

After the Scan to Folder configuration is completed, access (create job) the Quick Set at the Printer Control Panel.

The Scan to Network Folder setup is at least somewhat similar to that for the LaserJet Pro MFP Printer series.

Requirements for HP+ printers

This topic describes the requirements for HP+ printers.

NOTE: HP+ is only available in some countries/regions

Keep the printer connected to the Internet

HP+ printers are cloud-connected devices that must remain connected to the Internet in order to function. The
Internet connection enables the printer to deliver HP+ specific app features and firmware updates.

During setup, you must connect the printer to the Internet using a supported network connection. After setup, you can print using a USB cable connection, if desired, but the printer must still be connected to the Internet.

Use Original HP cartridges

Original HP cartridges are cartridges manufactured and sold by HP in official HP packaging. If non-Original HP supplies or refilled cartridges are installed, HP+ printers will not operate as expected.

If you are willing to do so, you can somewhat automate the final "Save" destination and file type.

HP Smart Shortcuts include a method to save scanned (and optionally edited) content to a supported Cloud destination folder.

True - the content must be ready for the Shortcut action -- For example, the content should be scanned, edited, ready to be saved.

Should you have HP+ enabled, "Searchable PDF" is included as one of the available File Types.
