Hi,
I have been running my HP Deskjet 3632 printer and scanner with no problems until this point. I tried to scan using HP Scan and Capture yesterday, and ran into a 'General failure'.
I've managed to fix this in the past, using HP Print and Scan Doctor. Trying to run it on this occasion, it appears to hang during the Windows (WIA) Scan. This has happened twice.
I've looked elsewhere on the forum and checked the three services that were mentioned, and none of these appear to be the root of the problem.
I am close to uninstalling and reinstalling the printer, but not sure that will actually fix the problem.
Please help,
Casey

Hello, @CaseyBee – Hope you are well 🙂
Welcome to the HP Forum! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips!
I see that you are having issues while printing scanning your Deskjet printer. WIA is a component of Windows OS which helps in scanning.
Please verify the following OS services are enabled and try scanning again:
- Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open
- Type services.msc and click OK.
- Locate the 'Shell Hardware Detection' in the list. If it is not enabled/started, make sure to enable/start the service. Also, make sure the Startup Type set as Automatically from its properties.
- Locate the 'Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)' in the list. If it is not enabled/started, make sure to enable/start the service. Also, make sure the Startup Type set as Automatically as well
- Locate the 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)' in the list. Perform the same steps as above.
- Restart the PC and check for issue resolution.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Good luck 🙂

I ran the Print and Scan Doctor and it hung up on the WIA scan. I did the services.msc and all three links were running and automatic. I have had this printer 2+ years and have not had a scan problem, until today. Got a new computer about 3 months ago, that is the only thing that has changed. I scanned photos about 2 weeks ago and no problems. Now all of a sudden the Windows 10 WIa is not working

Installing new HP OfficeJet Pro 8710. After 2nd Software and Driver download to solve a web service issue, My HP LaserJet Pro MFP M477fnw would no longer run the Print and Scan Doctor scan test--hung during the WIA test. The Remote Procedure call was not running and in Manual startup. It was fine after the initial installation. Thank goodness for this document--I ran across it by sheer accident. THANK YOU!!!
