Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).
Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I try using the HP Scan and Capture app for scanning documents.  I have done this with four different systems with three different scanner devices, so it is not localized to a single computer or printer, it is the app that is the issue.  Documents will scan ~1mb per page, when set to 200 dpi, grey, pdf; which creatures a struggle that I am assembling a report that is over 150MB because of the pdf pages being attached in my appendices!!!

One of the scanners I have used, which I no longer have access to, allowed scanning directly to a USB.  That would scan, at 300 dpi, in color, with the output being ~100kb per page instead of ~1mb per page.  (BTW, I once used this particular scanner with the HP Scan and Capture app with the same oversized output.)

What gives?

What gives?

No idea.

Obviously I cannot duplicate your situation - I did run another test to confirm (that my test data, single page) saves at 346KB.  Meh.  Proves nothing, of course.

HP Scan and Capture is an application.

You can remove it from Windows Start > Restart the computer and log in  > "Get" a new copy of the application from the Microsoft Store

What else?

There are alternatives - the number and types depend on your printer model.

Assuming a your device is a printer as opposed to a "scanner" (scans but does not print), there are several options that might be useful to try - at least for the purpose of comparing the results.  (In fact, some / all of these might work with an actual scanner device - I cannot test or verify that is the case.)

Full Feature Software - for a Laser printer, this might be called "Full Solution" software.  When available this software is found at the printer's own support website in Category Software and Drivers, possible "right there" or possible in sub-category "Software-Utility".

HP Smart for Windows 10 - Application

More or less compatible with many printers and the Windows 10 Operating System.

"Get" the application from the Microsoft Store

If your scan software supports it, once the Full Feature Software is installed, you might have access to the Twain utility.  Quite similar to the HP Scan (found in the Full Feature Software), Twain scanning provides a simple interface and several standard scan options.

Irfanview - free software that can print and scan - a bit more setup involved; this is true editing software that can also output image to PDF.  Software scan using Twain or printer.  Only mentioned here as FYI as something worth a look.
