HP Scanner 5590 with ADF
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The pickup roller on my HP Scanner 5590 ADF does not feed a sheet. The roller is supposed to drop down. When the scanner calls for a sheet the gears spin and try to engage the drop down gear. But it seems to slip with a slight clunking sound and wiggles the roller assembly but doesn't drop it. It will does this a couple of times then throws an error that there is a paper jam.

I put a paper wad in the photocell feed detector so I can watch the roller action with the lid open. The ADF has hardly been used. I did not see any stripped or broken gears. Occasionally something works and the feed roller will drop with a fair amount of force. What gears should I be looking at to find the problem?

Welcome to HP Support community.

Cleaning the feed-roller assembly manually

  1. Open the hatch, and then lift the green tab to the fully open position. The feed-roller assembly should be in a nearly vertical position.

Figure : Opening the ADF hatch

  2. Lift the green tab to expose the feed rollers.

  3. Use an HP ADF cleaning cloth to clean each of the feed rollers and the small rubber pad that is located below the rollers.

    NOTE:

If you do not have the HP ADF cleaning cloth, use a lint-free cloth that has been dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

  4. Wipe the area around the small rubber pad to remove any paper dust.

  5. Lower the green tab and feed-roller assembly.

  6. Close the hatch.

I hope that helps.

I don't want to be a twit but I must comment that you have just sent me a reply that is a copy of what many people on numerous forums and what's in the user manual have stated. Apparently you do not understand this paper feed mechanism that is used on most HP scanning models.

As I stated in my original note the feed rollers are just fine, paper does not jam (in fact it never enters the roller). I have further details about the feed mechanism. With the lid open so I can watch the rollers, I first manually spin the drive gear until the first feed roller is in the up position. Then I feed a stack of papers. They feed perfectly but on the last sheet the machine does not detect the end of the sheet. At this point the drive gear must reverse, and allow a cam to drop into a slot on the drive gear and lock the gear to the roller. Now the machine is supposed to reverse the drive gear which lifts the roller assembly off the cork sponge because the cam is locked in place to the assembly. Since this doesn't happen the scanner throws a paper jam error. To clear it I manually turn the drive gear until the roller assembly is lifted, turn off the power and back on which resets the error message. I can now scan another stack of papers until the end at which point I get the jam problem.

I am beginning to think that there might be something wrong with the circuit that detects the end of the last page. Do you have a service manual that describes how the roller mechanism is supposed to work and a fix?

I was on the fixya forum and several people had the same problem. All reviewers said that same thing: clean the rollers, etc., etc. No one seems to understand this problem. One fellow said that the density of the printing on the sheets affects the end of page detection but this is nonsense to me.
