Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).
Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a user that recently started using the hp smart app to scan on windows 10.  When scanning documents it scans every page in landscape instead of portrait.  I do not see an option to scan to portrait in the HP Smart application.  I can rotate the images after they are scanned but he often has many pages that he is scanning and it is too much to rotate each page individually.  Is there a way to get it to scan in portrait mode by default?

I cannot find anything in the Printer Settings (scroll to the right in the ribbon under your printer in HP Smart) that controls the orientation other than the manner in which the document is loaded onto the glass or in the ADF.

I would guess that the orientation is therefore "read" from the document / image on the printer glass (or placed in the ADF).  Since scanning is not much more than Copy with the added ability to save the document / image to the computer, it makes sense that "What you see is what you get" - at least in this context.  (No emails, please, I realize "Scan" is not "Copy" - the poor comparison is only used to illustrate a point.)

The following is relevant if the user is using the ADF:

Note: If you are scanning from the automatic document feeder (ADF), you might experience problems with your scanned document if you select a paper size larger than the size of the document loaded in the ADF.

As a test, use Webscan from the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to check what is happening.

NOTES

At least in my setup (Officejet Pro 9025), accessing the EWS from HP Smart works OK; however, Webscan does not open the requisite "second" browser page to view the scanned document - the scan process hangs in mid-scan.  (Killing (Terminating HP Smart clears the "device busy" error that is a result of the "cannot finish the scan" process.)

For this reason, I suggest that you invoke EWS from your browser on the computer.

Know that Webscan does not require that you have installed any printer software on your computer.

Webscan Test

Place one page of the document on the printer glass in the appropriate orientation for the printer.

If you are unsure how to load the paper, see the printer's User Guide.

NOTES

In general, some printers show (mark) which corner to place a document on the printer glass.  Unfortunately, the placement varies so there is no way for me to tell you which option is the correct option for your (unknown) printer.

In general, documents are placed in the ADF (for example, in Officejet Pro printers) face up, top of document toward the printer (where the paper travels into the printer).  Do not place photos in the ADF and be mindful of the paper sizes allowed in that device.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Scan

Webscan

Check / Adjust the available settings

Scan the page.

A secondary browser style window opens and displays the scanned page / image.

The page / image can be saved to the computer.

Check the results.

Another possibly brilliant or wasted test:

Open HP Smart Software

Click Scan icon

Tab Import

Open the desired folder location

Select a document page or image

Click to "open" that image / page

If necessary, click on each "blue" dot to drag the boundaries into place

Click Apply

Click to Print the results

So, what?

This might be "brilliant" in the sense that if you get a different result from that of the User, something odd is perhaps going on in that User's setup (Hp Smart software / settings / actions).  This might be a waste of time - though of interest to illustrate one of the great options in the HP Smart software, the test might not really prove anything about what the User is doing with the initial scan job(s).
