Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. I had the same problem, but got it resolved. The HP customer service solved the problem. My printer was connected to my PC by USB cable and I discovered that with the new HP Smart app scanning will only work if your printer is wirelessly connected. For some of you that my answer the question.

Mine would not connect using either method. The HP Scan app is faulty. The Microsoft Scan and Fax app which is built in to Windows works just fine.

I phoned the helpline as my printer is still under warranty. I was told that THE  SCANNER  WILL  NOT  WORK  IF  IT  IS  CONNECTED  USING   A USB  CABLE.  I reconnected the printer wirelessly, without the usb cable and the scanner now works.

Ne0t's suggestion works for me. Sad that even after 6 Months there is no update from HP for this.
