hp printer does not print both sides

A couple weeks ago an HP support agent remoted-in to my computer and demonstrated how to use HP SMART to scan to a pdf. I sensed they were in a hurry to end the session, so I did not ask them to show 2-sided scan. Stupid of me! Now I'm unable to figure out from the software instructions (HP ENVY Inspire 7900e series online manual) nor from the options offerred by the HP SMART dialog

Another chat session would be a last resort. I know from experience thatI will have to devout 2-3 hours to get to the front of the queue, then another 20-30 minutes to convince them that remoting-in to my computer is the best way.

A step that isn't mentioned in the manual is an option in the dialog called "Auto Enhancement." If you don't turn that ON, then it will scan onlly 1 page at a time.

I also noticed something that's shown in the Preview. It let's you rotate the image 90 degrees at a time. Although it didn't change the result, I thought someone here may know something about it. It's hard for me to describe the icon, but I'll include an image of it with this posting.

TIA for your help.

I did some research and found a solution😀 It's in a topic on this very board with the title "Printing 2-sided". The software is called HP Scan extended.  I downloaded the software from
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m282-m285-multifunc...

Here are images of the dialog to do the scan:

A lot of time and effort betwee Dragon-fur and myself. Finding a solution makes it well worth it.

This printer does not support automatic duplex scanning.

2-sided scan operation must be done manually.

Scan Size Maximum (ADF, Imperial)8.5 x 14 in
Scan Size Maximum (ADF, metric)215.9 x 355.6 mm
Scan Size Maximum (flatbed, imperial)8.5 x 11.7 in
Scan Size Maximum (flatbed, metric)215.9 x 297 mm
Scan Speed (normal, A4)Up to 8 ppm (200 ppi, b&w), up to 3.5 ppm (200 ppi, color)
Scan Speed (normal, letter)Up to 8 ppm (200 ppi, b&w), up to 3.5 ppm (200 ppi, color)
Scan TechnologyContact Image Sensor (CIS)
Scan TypeFlatbed, ADF
Scanner Advanced FeaturesSupported using HP Smart App
Scanning Options (ADF)Single-Sided

After the content is scanned and Saved,

The document can be printed in duplex in supported sizes.

Standard Media Sizes (duplex, Imperial)Letter, Executive (all media lengths between 5.5 and 12.2")
Standard Media Sizes (duplex, metric)A4 (210 x 297 mm); A5 (148 x 210 mm); B5 (176 x 250 mm); all media lengths between 140mm and 309mm

HP Smart

In general, leave that auto-enhancements for orientation set OFF - it seems to cause more trouble than it is worth, I think.

Rotating the scanned content is generally used correct / change the scan page.

What to do?

2-sided scan

See the following - different printers -- the process is perhaps similar

HP Envy 6400 All-in-One Printer Series  Scan 2-sided documents and automatically sort page order

OR

HP Officejet Pro 8025 | 8025e | 8020 | 8035 Printer : Scan 2 sided document using HP Scan

Wait!

Not sure about the first video - the second video needs the Full Feature Software / full printer driver printer software installed.  HP Scan is part of the full feature software / full driver printer software.

IF you have not done so, install the full driver printer software so you can use HP Scan.

Different printer - perhaps a similar process

HP DeskJet 2700 series printer : Download Offline Copy of Software and Install on Win 10 computer

OR

Method - Use the Easy Start Software to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software

For printers that support the option,

Use the Easy Start Software wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Open Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start Software to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software” / "Basic" software
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Optional Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
  2. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the Smart application).  If necessary, select the "Basic" Software.
  3. Skip / Ignore suggestion(s) that you add anything you do not want / need at the moment.  For example, you do not (at the time of installation) need an HP Account and you do not need or want to sign up for Instant Ink just because you are loading the printer software.
  4. Full driver provides access to the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.

Dragon-fur,

Thanks for  your reply.

I decided to try the Easy Start..

You say About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the Smart application).  If necessary, select the "Basic" Software.

I didn't see that. But I'm going to go ahead and restart.

Dragon-fur,

You state at the beginning,
This printer does not support automatic duplex scanning. Unfortunately, it looks like that is the end of the story.

Nevertheless, I tried each of the methods you discuss:

1. HP Officejet Pro 8025 | 8025e | 8020 | 8035 Printer : Scan 2 sided document using HP Scan
2. IF you have not done so, install the full driver printer software so you can use HP Scan.
3. HP DeskJet 2700 series printer : Download Offline Copy of Software and Install on Win 10 computer
4. Method - Use the Easy Start Software to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software. This was included in method 3.

You suggest that...2-sided scan operation must be done manually. After the content is scanned and Saved, the document can be printed in duplex in supported sizes.

I don't understand how that would work. In my case, the documents I would be working with are
already printed front and back. I want the scan-to-pdf to scan the front, then let me rotate the documents and scan the backs, such that the resulting pdf has them stored as:

page-1-front, page1-back, then
page-2-front, page-2-back, then
page-n-front, page-n-back.

Again, Dragon-fur thanks for your suggestions. I'm planning on trying to get a chat technician to remote-in and show me how to do this. I'm worried that I may have misunderstood what the previous chat session demonstrated, that is, perhaps that one actually confirmed what we've learned here. "It can't be done with this printer..."
