LaserJet Pro MFP M28w
iOS

I have LaserJet Pro MFP M28w. According to specification it should scan at 600 dpi.  Unfortunately, the HP Smart app (recent version 8.11.1) on iPadOS (recent firmware 15.2) has maximum 300 dpi option available:

Here is a difference between magnified parts of scanned images of the same printer test page (was printed by the same printer). The result was saved as actual size PNG images:

  • on the left – using max available 600 dpi in HP Easy Scan app on my friend's Mac
  • on the right – using max available 300 dpi HP Smart app on my iPad

How to get 600 dpi scanner functionality on LaserJet Pro MFP M28w using HP Smart app on my iPad?

@Artem_UA, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you would like to scan in 600dpi from the iOS device using the HP Smart app.

Have you tried different documents and check the scan settings if you can select 600dpi?

Are you saving it as a PDF or JPEG file? Try both and check the difference.

Keep me posted.

Hi Kumar,

> Have you tried different documents and check the scan settings if you can select 600dpi?

I tried multiple documents. Unfortunately, the only option available in HP Smart app on my iPad is 300 dpi.

I tried PDF/HEIF/TIFF/JPEG output formats – they all produced the same 300 dpi image, the only difference was the output file size. Note that my goal is to scan my photo archive and then add the images to iPad Photo app. So the PDF as an output format is not an option.

I also tried switching between "document" and "photo" scanning mode in HP Smart app. Regardless of the mode the app offers 300 dpi max.

I guess there is an issue in HP Smart app for iPad that prevents users from scanning at 600 dpi (not sure a generic for all devices or specific to LaserJet Pro MFP M28w I own).

I understand. It seems like an app limitation with this model printer. If you need to scan in 600dpi, kindly use a computer.

I'm afraid there are no other options available.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Alternative products in the same price segment can scan at 600 dpi on iPad, so it’s definitely not an iPad hardware limitation.

Could you please fill a few bug reports:

  1. for HP Scan iOS app developers to fix missing 600 dpi scanning option for appropriate HP products;
  2. fix current specs of appropriate HP products to clarify that customers can get 600 dpi scan on computer only but not on iPad;
  3. fix current HP Scan app description in App Store to stop confusing customers who cannot get the 600 dpi scan functionality that is promised by their HP device specs on their iPad.

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.

6)Fill the web-form and proceed further.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Same problem here on Mac OS 12.2 or iPhone iOS 15.3. HP support told me that it’s an actual limitation with Mac, and for now there is nothing to do with it…
