OK, thaks again. This time I finally found the search box, which I'd had "hidden" and changed it to not hidden. However, when I put the icon of the flatbed scanner on my desktop, I got an error message saying that I could not open the scanner because another program was using it. I assume that other program is my HP App icon on my desktop, which has been working fine for me to do scanning. So, I guess I was fine with the solution that was given to me before by Shlomi. It also seems like HP App is a more robust program that the one that would come under the flatbed icon, though using that one might save one keystroke by taking me directly to the scanning function instead of now when I open HP App icon, I have to select Scan. But there are also more choices of functions there (that's why I say it is more robust). I know that with computers, there are often several different ways to accomplish a result. I deleted the flatbed icon from my desktop, because I'm fine with HP App. You did help me understand how your alternative way works, thanks. Any comments, let me know.
