HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I used HP Smart for years and no user name or password was required.  Now when I hit "scan" the user name and password screen pops up.  It said a custom password was developed but does not say what it is.  Whatever I put in including my HP username and password does not work.  It says the password is incorrect but does not mention id regardless of what is used.  It totally blocks scanning including the preview.  Printing has no such problem.

Hi @genbun,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e scanner asking for a username and password when using HP Smart is likely related to enhanced security settings introduced in recent firmware or HP Smart updates. Here's how to resolve it:

1. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

You’ll need to access your printer’s settings through a browser:

  1. Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer:
    • On the printer control panel, go to Settings > Network Setup > Print Network Configuration Page.
  2. Find the IP address of the printer on the printout.
  3. Open a browser on your PC and enter the IP address (e.g., http://192.168.1.123).

2. Reset or Set the Administrator Password

Once in the EWS:

  • Go to Settings > Security > Administrator Settings.
  • If a password is already set and you don’t know it:
    • You may need to restore the printer to factory defaults (see below).
  • If you can access it:
    • Set a new admin password that you’ll remember.
    • Save changes and try scanning again via HP Smart.

3. Factory Reset the Printer (if locked out)

If you can’t access the EWS due to the unknown password:

  1. On the printer, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  2. This will reset all settings, including the admin password.
  3. Reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi and re-add it in HP Smart.

⚠️ Note: This will remove saved Wi-Fi and custom settings but not affect ink levels or HP+ subscription.

4. Reinstall HP Smart (Optional)

If the issue persists:

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
