Welcome to the HP Community --

The solution depends on the source of the problem -

For example,

  • A poor network connection can certainly cause issues when scanning.
  • A busy system can cause trouble if there is not enough resource for greedy scan process.

Less easily checked but worth a look, network interference by other devices --

Example,

  • Too many devices using the network - scanning requires a solid connection and one that does  not suddenly drop, change channels, or change network frequency (Mesh network).
  • Old, outdated, poorly placed, weak router -- or a router that is not fully or correctly configured.  Router sourced issues are common problem, in fact.

What else?

Data sourced issues,

For example

  • Very dense data -- this comes back to available resources in some cases.
  • Scanning at 1200 DPI -- similar issue -- if the connection falters, Poof!

System sourced issues,

  • Windows updates not current, not installed, pending, stuck
  • System Updates not current, not installed

and possibly a big one,

  • HP Smart app broken, corrupted, or otherwise compromised.

The solution for broken app --

Reset the HP Smart application - This action removes the app data.

How to...

Windows 10 -

Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

OR

Windows 11 -

Settings > Apps > Installed Apps

Next,

Search / Find HP Smart in the apps list

Open Advanced options > Reset the app

Restart the computer and log in

Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)

================================================

Devices

  • Mis-matched versions of HP Smart on different devices.  What?  Every device where HP Smart is installed should be running the latest version of HP for that device and platform.
