HP Officejet Pro 6830
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

It was time to replace my HP Officejet 6310 printer. I wanted to stay with the HP brand because I need to use the HP Solution Center software provided with the printer to manage all my scanning, printing and fax. So I purchased the HP Officejet Pro 6830. This model does not include the HP Solution Center! Instead it has the HP Printer Assistant which does not have the features I need. I called HP to find out what models do have the HP Solution Center but she said she did not have a list. And I can't find this software listed in product description while shopping for HP printers. Please help! I need to purchase a HP print-scan-fax device that has the HP Solution Center software. Here is a link to a previous HP Support Forum stating that the HP Solution Center software is not affilated in any manner with the Officejet Pro 6830 and cannot detect the device of that model:  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup/HP6830-not-recognized-in-HP-Solution-C...

I called HP tech support. The HP Solution Center "is no longer supported" all new models.

So here is what I can no longer do with HP printers:

1. Cannot see up close the image I am scanning. So I cannot crop accurately or make fine adjustments.

2. Grainy scanning quality PDFs. I scanned "line art" or text in black and white mode and it is low-resolution resolution, despite the use of 300 dpi and adjusting the brightness.

3. PDF limited to 300 dpi.

4. No descreen feature for scanning dot matrix photos from newspapers.

5. JPG limited to 1200 dpi (used to be 9600 with Solution Center).

It appears that HP scanners offer only basic features. I am switching to Epson printers which utilize Document Capture Pro Software and the advance features that HP has taken away from us.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

Excerpted from your Post:

"Instead it has the HP Printer Assistant which does not have the features I need."

Commentary

The Printer Assistant has indeed replaced the Solution Center in most instances -- The Printer Assistant, like the Solution Center, is a tool kit manager program that gathers together a number of printer untilities under one program umbrella.  The name was perhaps changed to better reflect the character of of tool set.  I think there might have been a naming conflict as well; this last is speculation on my part.

For those who might be reading this:

Once installed, the "Printer Assistant" is not named the Printer Assistant on the Desktop, the shortcut is named for the printer model software for which it was installed.  The term "Printer Assistant" is used to describe the function of the program.

Sure wish I would've seen this post sooner, I'm having the same problem.  I can no longer open "HP Solution Center" as an app. to scann documents/pictures.  This was a big deal to me, as I scan quite a bit.  Need some help figuring out a solution.  As previously stating in the blog, I also need the ability to crop, etc. while scanning.  Help?

@HisCoolness

I suggest you create your own, new Thread (Post) where you can include your equipment information and your Operating System (both important).

Opening your own post will provide more focus to your situation -- Older Threads, especially those where there might be a different solution for your setup, can "muddy" the issue.

Brilliant Post - How to Ask Your Question

Meanwhile, so you are not left "hanging", I can offer the following:

In general, if things are not working and you think they should work (they worked yesterday), you can (re)install the printer software from a fresh copy of the latest Full Feature Software at your printer's website support page.

Note that whether (re)installing the printer program actually fixes anything largely depends on why the program failed.  For example, for Windows 10 (at this writing), a recent KB* update has played havoc with some applications -- it appears that the printer software may be a casualty, at least for some people.  Reinstalling the printer software won't fix that -- you have to wait for Microsoft to fix the problem.

  • Check for the new copy of the software before you remove your existing program.
  • Create a Restore Point
  • Download the Full Feature Software
  • Remove the existing printer program from Programs and Features / Apps and Features
  • Reboot
  • Install the downloaded package
  • Reboot

Solution Center -- for "newer" products and those printers benefiting from newer versions of the printer program -- has been replaced with the Printer Assitant.  Both programs provide about the same services, albeit in a different format.

Help, Instructions, and examples:

Install Full Feature Software – Printer

NOTE: If the computer has recently been migrated to Windows 10, you may need to remove the existing printer software > reboot > download and install fresh copy of the Full Feature Software > reboot

You can use an "alternate" scan program -- good news:  these programs are either free or already included in Windows.  At least two of them are easy to use and provide decent sized Crop windows!

HP Printer Assistant replaced HP Solution Center in name but the features of the software (if you have installed the FULL FEATURE software)  are pretty much the same.

Hope that helps.

Happy New Year 2016!

Microsoft released a patch today https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3133431 that allows embedded Flash files to run in the browser. This should fix HP Solution Center.

Please do not uninstall MS security updates and leave yourselves vulnerable.

Glad to see these other posts.  I think I'm going to try Epson next, too.  It's ridiculous that HP Solution Center just stopped working, since I've made no changes to my laptop configuration.  I've tried reinstalling the printer through both the standard Windows means and also through the HP Solution Center means, and HP SOlution Center STILL cannot find the printer, although I can print to it wirelessly.  I've tried downloading and reloading HP Solution Center, too, from your website.  Since I need scan to file capabilities, and your software just stops working for no apparent reason, I'm going to have to try another manufacturer.

Hi @Ann2013

This issue wasn't caused by HP.  HP was was just one of those affected by this update.  Skype, Incredimail program, Serif's Webplus & GameMaker etc were also affectd by the patch.

Do take a read on this article:
