We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

HP ENVY 6055e All-in-One Printer

I have tried to copy and tried to scan using HP Smart. I get this consistent error message: Scanner in use. I have tried everything suggested. I have spent almost 3 hours on a live consult from an HP Tech. Here is the case file:

Case Subject:  This printer is supposed to copy and scan. It copied ok when originally set up but it did not scan. After researching this issue I downloaded HP Scan and Capture. After downloading and running the ap on my Desk Top running Windows 11 and Edge  it still would not scan. Now the printer won't scan using  the scanning ap or copy . When I try to copy the printer starts by showing number 1 on the display but then it just hangs after that. All it does is print.

Copying Issues:

If the printer starts but hangs after showing "1" on the display when trying to make a copy, follow these steps:

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 1 minute.
  • Plug the printer back in, and turn it on. Try to make a copy again.

Check Paper Jam or Print Queue:

  • Ensure that there are no paper jams inside the printer that might be causing it to hang.
  • Also, check the print queue on your computer to see if there are any pending print jobs that might be causing interference with the copying function.

Reset the Printer:

  • Sometimes a reset can resolve issues. To reset the printer, find the reset option in the printer's menu or consult the printer's manual for instructions specific to your model.

Scanning Issues:

If you're encountering a "Scanner in use" error when trying to scan using HP Smart or HP Scan and Capture, try the following:

Close Background Applications:

  • Make sure that no other applications or devices are using the scanner. Close any unnecessary programs on your computer.

Restart HP Smart and Computer:

  • Close HP Smart completely and restart it. Also, restart your computer to clear any temporary issues.

Check Scanner Connection:

  • Ensure that the printer is correctly connected to your computer via USB or over the network (if it's a wireless connection).

Update HP Smart and Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure that both HP Smart and your printer's firmware are up to date. Sometimes updates include fixes for scanning and copying issues.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from the HP website. This tool can diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems automatically.

Reinstall HP Smart or HP Scan and Capture:

  • If issues persist, try uninstalling and reinstalling the HP Smart app or HP Scan and Capture app on your computer.

I have tried these remedies  in the past without success. I've also tried a cold re-install of the printer and HP Smart, as well as opening my desktop pc to remote access by an HP Tech Service tech which ran between two and three hours, also unproductive. Maybe it's time for a warranty claim for replacement.

How can I determine which applications are running in the background and have printer access. That would possibly remedy the Scanner in use message.
