I have an HP 5540 all in one and use a Windows OS.
My printer works fine. The scanner used to work fine, but now does not. I can open the Windows scan app but when I click "new scan" I get an error msg. Under PC settings I see the printer. But when I click on 'scanner properties' there is no device selected. The HP network config pg says Network status is "offline" and wireless status is disconnected.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer driver. I've tried to use HP Doctor to troubleshoot the issue. Nothing has worked. Please help me to fix the scanner issue.
UPDATE: I fixed the issue by removeing the USB cord from the USB hub and inserting it directly into the hard drive USB outlet.
I don't understand why the hub connection worked for the printer, but not the scanner in the original configuration. But now both printer and scanner are working. So if by chance you have your USB connected to a hub rather than directly to the PC. try switching it as I did.

Hi@richards1052, @DBow2,
Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!
I see you are experiencing scanning issues with the HP All in one scanner.
I have a few recommendations
Follow the Steps below to resolve scanning problems using the HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Windows: Download HP Print and Scan Doctor.
- Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.
- Once HP Print and Scan Doctor is open, click Start, and then choose your printer.
- If your printer is not listed, turn it on and click Retry.
- If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in the tool.
- Click Fix Scanning.
- A missing or outdated scanner driver can cause your HP scanner not to work, so you should update your scanner driver up to date. There are two ways to update your scanner driver: manually and automatically.
- Check your USB cable from the printer to the Windows device and be sure it is plugged in. Check if your printer is running in normal parameters and all the lights are on. Check and see if you can print a document so that we resume ourselves only to the scanning feature of the printer.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
