Since I was upgraded to HP.app (version 20.1), saving a scanned document as a PDF results in a much bigger file size than was the case with HP Smart.app.  HP Smart app on macOs 15.6 was fine.  A 5.5 page letter - scanned with HP Smart - at 300 dpi - would result in a 1.9MB pdf.  Now a 1.5 page pdf scanned by HP.app, also at 300 dpi, sits in 3.2MB.

I've seen other posts on this kind of subject that suggest using macOs Preview to export the bloated pdf using the 'Reduce File Size' Quartz filter.   That doesn't work for me, the compression needs to be done by HP.app to avoid a lot of inconvenience.

Please help.

@RedPike, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

When scanning documents using HP apps, file sizes can vary based on several factors, including image quality settings, compression methods, and embedded metadata. The increase in file size you are experiencing with HP.app, as compared to HP Smart.app, might be attributed to changes in default settings or enhanced image quality features in the new version.

Here's how you can manage and possibly reduce the file size of scanned PDFs:

Check Scan Settings: Ensure that the scanning settings in HP.app are configured for optimal file size. Consider adjusting the following:

  • Optimize Text/Picture: Set this to 'Text' if the document is primarily text, to reduce file size.
  • Color Mode: Use 'Black & White' or 'Grayscale' instead of 'Color' if possible.
  • File Type: Consider using other file types like JPEG or lower-quality PDF settings if acceptable for your use case.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Garp

I do think that HP.app is worse at pdf compression than HP Smart.

I have confirmed the settings used with HP Smart.app are still in use with HP.app.

Should have mentioned that I'm using an HP 9120e (firmware: 6.23.5.67-202507241513) to do the scanning.

Regards,

J.
