The error you're seeing "Fax hardware is either missing or not seated" along with Error Code 79 typically indicates a firmware-level fault or hardware detection issue with the fax module in your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw.

Here are the steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

 

Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the error clears.

Check Fax Hardware Seating

  • Open the printer’s access panels and ensure all internal components are properly seated.
  • Gently press down on any visible modules or connectors.

Run a Fax Test

  • On the printer control panel, go to:
    • Setup > Fax Setup > Fax Reports > Run Fax Test
  • Review the report for any failed tests and follow the suggested actions.

Check Phone Line Connection

  • Ensure the phone line is connected to the 1-LINE port on the back of the printer.
  • If using a DSL or VoIP line, make sure a high-pass filter is installed.
  • Try connecting the printer to a dedicated analog line.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page and check for the latest firmware.
  • Follow the instructions to update via USB or network.
