I can print from the Mac and also from any wireless hardware - but the Scan just wont work - just sticks with "preparing to scan" and then nothing happens
Also tried to scan from the printer itself - nothing there
I've tried from the HP Scan app and also from the Printer option in the System preferences
Appreciate any help

A warm welcome to HP Support Community!
Removing the existing Scanner Application and then installing HP Easy Scan may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:
1.) Open Finder, click Applications.
2.) Delete the existing HP scanner applications by moving it to trash.
3.) Download and install HP Easy Scan from here.
Instruction on how to use HP Easy Scan can be found here.
If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution and Kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Have a great day!

This is clearly a problem with the MAC drivers - have a windows laptop and it will scan.

Use the following steps to remove the existing printer driver and then setup the printer with Apple AirPrint. Setting up the printer with Apple AirPrint should enable the print and scan functions:
Please ensure that the printer is up to date with its firmware and Mac is up to date with it's software. If you are unsure you may use the links below to update the printer firmware and Mac software:
1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.
3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.
4.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.
5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint or Secure AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.
6.) Try to print and Scan.

Is there any other steps before I throw the printer out and buy a new non HP printer
The only firmware update is for Windows and not Mac 10.14 - there are no drivers available anywhere
I'm frustrated as before the "help" i was actually able to print from the MAC
The printer works fine with all Windows machines and will Airprint from Ipads & iphones
Seems to me that the HP Envy 4500 doesn work with Mac - if thats the case the please say so or provide a driver update for the MAC

HP Easy Start application will help set up your HP printer and prepare your Mac for printing. HP Easy Start will locate and install the latest software for your printer and then guide you through printer setup. You may download HP Easy Start from here.
Any error when you try to print?
