HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP 4650 will print, but will not scan.  I have run HP Dr. and it says it is a device error.  I have tried everything I can find that is recommended including doing a factory reset and it still will not scan. When I try and scan, I get this message.

Hi @bagnell,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Connections:

  • Ensure that your printer is properly connected to your computer via USB or is on the same Wi-Fi network if using wireless scanning.

Restart Devices:

  • Power off your printer and computer, then turn them back on to reset the network connection and drivers.

Update Printer Software and Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support Website to download and install the latest printer software and drivers for your model on Windows 11.

Enable Scan Functionality:

  • In Windows, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Select your HP 4650 printer and click on Manage.
  • Ensure that the printer's scan functionality is enabled.

Check Scanner Settings:

  • Open the HP Scan application (HP Smart or any other you use) and verify that the settings are correct.
  • Ensure that you have selected the right source (flatbed or document feeder).

Perform a Scanner Test:

  • Use HP Print and Scan Doctor again, but this time, choose ‘Fix Scanning’ and follow the on-screen prompts to diagnose scanner-related issues.

Firewall and Security Software:

  • Check if firewall or security software settings are blocking the scanning function. Temporarily disable these to see if scanning works.

Reinstall Printer Software:

  • Uninstall the printer software from your computer.
  • Reinstall it using the latest version available on the HP website.

Firmware Update:

  • Check for any available firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet 4650.

Check for Scanner Errors and Logs:

  • Check if any error messages appear on the printer’s display panel that might give additional clues to the problem.

I hope this helps.
