HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer

In the middle of a scanning process, the process has hung up. Cannot break out of the loop. Get the message that the "scanner is still in use" and "wait for previous task to complete" Have tried turning the computer and the 7640 off. Have tried HP Assistant. HP Doctor wants to reinstall but I cannot locate the ID and password for the 7640. Or is the 7640 ID the same as the serial number?

@Jeff2066,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Envy 7640 is stuck in a scanning loop. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Perform a Power Reset

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable (if using a wired connection).
  3. Turn off your computer.
  4. Wait about 5 minutes to allow the printer to fully reset.
  5. Plug in the printer and turn it back on.
  6. Restart your computer and try scanning again.

Cancel Any Stuck Print/Scan Jobs

  1. On your computer, open the Print Queue (Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Right-click on the HP7640 > See what’s printing).
  2. Cancel all pending jobs in the list.
  3. Try scanning again.

Reset the Printer

  1. From the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults and select Restore Factory Defaults.
  2. Restart the printer and reconnect it to your network.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

If the scanner is still stuck, HP Print and Scan Doctor can help:

  1. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  2. When prompted, allow it to reset the scanner.
  3. If it asks for a printer ID, this is not the serial number. The ID is usually set during the printer’s initial setup (e.g., if connected to HP Instant Ink or ePrint).
  4. If you cannot find the printer ID, you can skip the sign-in step and try reinstalling the software manually.

Reinstall HP Software

  1. Uninstall the current HP software from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Download the latest drivers from HP’s website: HP Envy 7640 Drivers.
  4. Install the new drivers and try scanning again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
