HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 Wide Format All-in-One Printer

Hi, My HP 7720 printer/scanner has got itself stuck in the menu area. It will not print and shows as offline in windows. I think that a full reset may do the trick but I cannot get the device to respond.

I have removed the power supply and internet feed end waited for 60 seconds before replacing the power but the problem still exists. The panel shows the 3 icons down the left hand side (home , ?, refresh) and the wi-fi light shows blue. The power button does not seem to do anything.

I also tried to remove power and hold the button down for 60 seconds before reapplying power but the screen display still shows the same.

This is important as the scanner is used to record community bills etc and I do not want to have to replace it as it was working well. The print function has never caused any issues.

Has anybody come across this persisting menu before?

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 is frozen on the menu screen and is unresponsive to power resets. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect the power cable from the printer while it is turned on.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the wall socket.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds (if possible).
  5. Plug the power cable directly into the wall socket (avoid using power strips or surge protectors).
  6. Reconnect the power cable to the printer and turn it on.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset

If the issue persists, try a semi-full reset:

  1. Disconnect the power cable.
  2. While unplugged, press and hold "9" and "Power" buttons together.
  3. Keep holding both buttons and reconnect the power cable.
  4. Continue holding for about 30 seconds, then release the buttons.
  5. The printer should restart and attempt to reset itself.

Check for Firmware Updates

If the printer is recognized on your computer, try updating the firmware:

  1. Go to HP's official support website: HP Software and Drivers
  2. Search for HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 and check for any firmware updates.
  3. If you can access the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant, try updating from there.

Access Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If the printer is connected to your network:

  1. Find the printer's IP address by pressing the Wi-Fi button.
  2. Enter the IP address in a web browser.
  3. Check if you can reset the printer or update the firmware from the EWS settings.

Let me know if this works!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thanks Zoe7888 but you have confused me. The printer is the HP7720 wide format .

I have unplugged the power from the printer and the wall socket, pressed the power button for about 60 seconds but when reconnected it still shows the 3 icons on the left (home, ?, and refresh) along with the wi-fi light showing blue. I even removed the power overnight to help in discharging any static etc. The power button does not click or anything when it is pushed so I do not know whether it is doing anything - whatever, it does not change the display..I have also rebooted the router with an hour delay but that did not make any difference either. I also  tried to remove the driver and restore it but it needs to see the printer as being available but cannot see it..

You said perform a semi full reset by holding down the 9 and power buttons but there is no 9 button.

@Les429, Thank you for your response!

It looks like your HP 7720 has decided to take an unscheduled break—let's give it a wake-up call!

Steps to Perform a Firmware Recovery:

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable.
  2. On your computer, go to HP’s official firmware update page:
    • HP Software and Drivers
    • Search for HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 and download the latest firmware update file.
  3. Put the printer in Firmware Recovery Mode:
    • Press and hold the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons simultaneously.
    • While holding these buttons, reconnect the power cable.
    • Continue holding for 10-15 seconds until the printer enters recovery mode (a blank or flashing screen may appear).
  4. Run the firmware update file on your computer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Once completed, restart the printer and check if it functions normally.

This step forces the printer to reload its firmware, which can resolve system freezes that normal resets don’t fix.

Let me know if you need further guidance! 😊

Thanks Zoey but stick no joy. I think that what you refer to as the cancel button is the one the manual calls the back button. I disconnected and tried the holding down the 2 buttons when I plugged the power back in  but nothing happened. However - just a thought - I notice that the power button does not light up. Should it light up at some point?

It is starting to look like I might need an engineer to take a look at the device which in turn probably means that nit would be cheaper to scrap it and start again. Not something I want to do as I had to do that with my previous HP scanner/printer.
