I have an HP8715.
It is reporting that the scanner is not available from Windows 11.
I have a Mac that accesses the scanner just fine.
I have another Windows 11 notebook "identical" to the one that fails that works.
The Windows 11 notebook with the scanner issue has no issues using the printer aspect of the same device.

I have restarted the notebook.
I have attempted to update the HP Smart software and been told that it is all up to date.

I understand how frustrating it is when your HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 scanner works perfectly on your Mac and another Windows 11 notebook, but fails on one specific Windows 11 device, even though printing works fine. You're doing everything right by updating HP Smart and restarting the notebook. Let’s dig deeper and get this resolved.

1. Check Windows Privacy Settings

Sometimes Windows blocks scanner access:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera & Microphone.
  • Scroll down to App permissions and ensure HP Smart and other scanning apps have access.


2. Use Windows Fax and Scan

Try scanning outside HP Smart:

  • Press Win + S, search for Windows Fax and Scan.
  • Open it and click New Scan.
  • Select your printer and see if it detects the scanner.


3. Reinstall the Full HP Software Package

Even if HP Smart is up to date, the full driver package may be missing: 🔗 HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer | HP® Support

  • Download the Full Software Solution.
  • Run the installer and choose “Full installation” to ensure all scanner components are installed.


4. Check Device Manager

  • Press Win + X > Device Manager.
  • Expand Imaging Devices.
  • Look for the HP OfficeJet Scanner
    • If missing or showing an error, right-click and choose Scan for hardware changes.
    • Or uninstall and restart to reinstall automatically.


5. Run HP App
