Hi, I scanned a document from the HP9023 Automatic Document Feeder straight to my PC (Windows 11 Pro), but I can not find the scan. I looked for a document named Scan in the Documents, My scans and Pictures folders. I also did a search in Documents for a .pdf modified today and it finds nothing?!?! If I do a scan manually on the glass feeder, then My documents open after the scan, but not for the ADF. Where is it saved? I am starting to suspect it did the scan, but does not save it? Why have an ADF option if I have to manually scan a multiple page document one page at a time.

Hey @Lizelle-OC,
Thank you for your response
It sounds like the issue with the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) scan is that it's not automatically saving the file to a location you can easily find. Since you've confirmed that manual scanning (on the glass) works fine and saves to the Documents folder, this is definitely a little strange.
Kindly try these steps:
Check HP Smart for ADF Settings:
It’s possible the ADF scan settings are slightly different from the flatbed scan settings, and it might not be configured to automatically save in the same location. You mentioned the Scan to Computer option was disabled in Advanced Settings. This is likely a key factor.
Even though you're scanning via USB, it's still essential to enable Scan to Computer in the settings, as this controls the overall scan behavior, including where files get saved.
Try enabling Scan to Computer in the printer's settings (even if the printer is connected via USB), which should make sure the scans from the ADF will save to the same default location (Documents, Pictures, etc.).
Check Printer Preferences on the PC:
When you scan from the printer's ADF, the computer may not be getting the correct “command” to automatically save the file.
On Windows 11, try opening Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9023 and select Scan Properties.
Under the Events tab, make sure the correct action is set to automatically save the scanned file.
Manual Scan on ADF via HP Software:
If none of the above works, try initiating the scan from the HP Smart software instead of directly from the printer. This can sometimes bypass any confusion with automatic settings.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix common printing issues.
Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)
- Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
Let me know how it goes.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.

@Lizelle-OC, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
It sounds like you're running into an issue where your HP OfficeJet Pro 9023 is scanning through the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), but you can't find where it's saving the document. Here are a few things you can try to pinpoint the location or resolve the issu
Check the default scan location:
Open HP Smart on your Windows 11 PC.
Go to the Scanner or Scan option.
Look for settings or options that allow you to set or view the default save location for scanned documents.
Ensure that the Scan to PC option is set up correctly with a location like the Pictures or Documents folder.
By default, the scanned document should be saved in Files > Pictures. Alternatively, you can check Files > Home > Recent to see where the files are being saved.
Let me know how it goes.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.

Good day, thank you very much for your suggestions. I tried it going to HP Smart choosing Scan, but no Folder Savings Location option. On the Main Menu is Printer Settings and then Advanded Settings. It shows Scan to Computer is disabled, but I do scan to computer directly from the printer as it is connected via USB - it is the online app that is not allowed. My PC is not open to Network sharing etc due to security reasons. Manual scanning page by page to PC works, (saves to the Document Folder), but I do not understand that the printer scans from the ADF and it is not possible to find out where it scanned to? If the manual scan saves to PC / Document Folder, then surely the ADF should too? HP should be able to tell me how to do a search to find it or what name to look for? I tried searching for .pdf modified today, but nothing. "Scan.pdf" is not under Documents, Pictures, My Scans and it is frustrating that it does the function, but can not be found. Thank you again for your help and suggestions.

Hi @Garp_senchau,
Thank you for following up - apologies it was a bit hectic to try all the options and give you detailed feedback. I wish I could send you screen shots, as I do not have the menu options you are suggesting.
HP Smart
When choosing Scan on the HP Smart menu, you only get the following options: Import / Source / Presets / Page Size / Output / Resolution - No option for save location.
When choosing HP Smart Printer Settings it opens on Printer Information, which does not include save locations. HP Smart Settings has the following options: Printer status / Supply status / Pinter Info / Network Info / Advanced Settings / Tools: Reports / Print Quality / see whats printing / Manage: Pring from other devices / Hide Printer.
So I choose Advanced Settings which gives the following menu: Scan to Email (have to add ports / servers etc - very technical) /
Scan to Network Folder - seems it is to On-line?
Fax / Energy Save Mode / Pringter Update / Estimate Cartridge Le... / Network Summary - All N/A
Web services: HP ePrint: On / Print Apps: On
None give of the above menus give an Option to check or change save locations.
PC Printer Settings: Control panel / Printers: (There is no SCAN Properties option)
Open print queue - N/A
Open printer app: opens HP Smart - tested all options above
Print test page - N/A
Printer properties: General (nothing there), Sharing / Ports / Advanced / Color management / Security / Device Settings - No option for save locations
Printing preferences: No option for save locations
Additional printer settings: Rename your printer / Pause printing - N/A
Hardware Properties: Has an Event Tab and it is BLANK next to Location Path - but it is a report and no option to change the location.
TRIED ALL ABOVE - BUT NO OPTIONS FOR SAVE LOCATIONS
So tried doing the ADF via HP Smart . . . Hooray it WORKED!!! Will do this in future - thank you so much!
Your mail had lots of instruction, so worked through them step by step with feedback. I chose to still send this reply instead of just clicking yes that worked as I hope it might help somebody else in future.
Many thanks for your preseverance in solving my issue. Regards.
