HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I have been using the Auto Document Feeder (top loader) feature of the HPENVY 7640 to scan multiple photos. I have a ton of photos to scan. When loading photos, I would receive a confirmation that beep and a message "originals loaded", press scan and see the photos be loaded and scanned. Now I can not get Auto Document feeder to work for scanning multiple photos or for copying multiple documents. I place the documents or photos in ADF and do not received confirmation beep or Original loaded message. If I try to scan then receive "reload Original" message error. IF I open ADF to review for jams or clean the wheels, I hear the beep and the "original loaded" message. I tried the unplug/replug/reset method and nothing was fixed. It appears there's a little black plastic "arm" sensor that dictates the beep and original load message. Is there a way to reset that or fix this problem at all? I can not confirm if something is broke but i do not ss any broken plastic pieces.

@thomasd10, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP ENVY 7640 Auto Document Feeder!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Since the sensor does trigger when you open the ADF (suggesting it's functional), the issue is likely due to dust, misalignment, or a mechanical problem. Here’s what you can try to fix it:

Clean the ADF Sensor and Rollers

Turn off the printer and unplug it.

Open the ADF and look for the small black plastic arm sensor.

Gently clean it using a lint-free cloth and a bit of isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher).

Wipe the rollers with a damp cloth (no excess liquid) to remove dust or debris.

Let everything dry completely before closing the ADF.

Check for Obstructions or Misalignment

Make sure no small paper pieces or dust are stuck in the ADF path.

Gently move the black plastic sensor up and down to check if it moves freely.

Inspect the paper path to ensure that nothing is blocking proper alignment.

Manually Test the Sensor

Try lightly pressing the black plastic arm with a small tool (like a Q-tip) and see if the "originals loaded" message appears.

If it does, but doesn't respond when loading actual documents, the arm may be misaligned or not making proper contact.

Reset the Printer

Unplug the printer from the power source for at least 60 seconds.

Plug it back in and turn it on.

Try scanning again.

Update Printer Firmware

Visit HP Software & Driver Download page.

Search for your HP ENVY 7640 and install any available firmware updates.

Adjust Paper Placement

Ensure you are inserting photos correctly—align them straight and push them slightly inward until you feel resistance.

Try different paper sizes to see if the sensor reacts to any.

Let me know if it helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
