Is it possible to get a Photosmart C309g-m to scan to PDF?  Since I can't get it to print, I'd at least like to scan my tax documents but it's always sanned as a photo.  Thank you!

The software is older - it may still be compatible "enough" with Windows 10 that you can install it.

If you can get the printer software to install, everything will be easier - including scanning.

Printer supports Ethernet and Wireless, too.

If the software won't install on Ethernet or Wireless because it seems to hang forever on the "device setup" phase where the printer is "detected" on the network, try installing using the Compatibility setting for Windows 7.  This still installs the Windows 10 software in the installation package but it uses "Windows 7" rules to complete the installation and setup.

Method – Manual – Set Compatibility

Download and Save the Full Feature Software to your computer

Navigate to your Downloads folder and open the folder so you can view the contents

Right-Click on the downloaded installation file > Properties > Compatibility

Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for"

Select Windows 7

Click Apply and OK to close the Properties menu

Right-Click on the program and select to Run as Administrator

After the software installs, Restart the computer and log in.

Once the software is installed, you can use the Printer Assistant shortcut icon on the Desktop named for your printer to get to the scan software.

And / Or

If it is all just "too much", the software won't install, you cannot wait, or "whatever",

If the printer is at least connected to the network,

You might be able to use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to access Webscan.

Webscan, if it is available, does not require the printer software to be installed.

Webscan does require a decent Ethernet or Wireless connection (on the same network) between the printer and the computer .

General Example (likely looks different but may be close enough)

Thank you.  It’s an old printer, already loaded to the computers but it has always scanned as jpeg.  I have been unable to find any settings I can change to scan to pdf.  I guess I’ll wait until the new printer is set up (hopefully, the update offers more options). Thank you

You are welcome.

Yes, "new" printers (at least most) provide relatively robust features.  The "higher-end" (more expensive) printers provide the most functionality.  All printers that are supported by the Full Feature Software (Full Solution Software for laser printers) provide access to "scan to PDF".

Current Printer (C309)

If the Full Feature Software is fully installed on the computer, you should have access to the HP Scan program that allows / supports "scan  / save to PDF" through the Printer Assistant.  (Image / Example provided in an earlier post.)

If the printer is on the network, Webscan (if available) provides PDF scan support.

(Image / Example provided in an earlier post.)

Consider / Try

HP Scan and Capture

Available from the Windows Store - Requires Windows 8 or higher

HP Scan and Capture provides scan to both jpeg and PDF files.

Link and Download  NAPS2

Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).  Includes OCR.  Download, save, and install to use.

NAPS2 has an "odd" catch in the software - you can scan what you like - if you want to Import scan files, these must have been created (original scan) using the NAPS2 software.  In so much that I am aware, this is the only software that requires the original scan be made using the same software to later use the "Import" function.  Still, for free software, it is a clever program and might be worth a look.
