Officejet Pro 6978
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Hi. I purchased my Officejet pro 6978 a few months ago and I love it. But now it's annoying. My old laptop died on me and I was forced to have it factory reset and ended getting a new one. Problem is now when I try to scan to my new laptop my printer refuses to find it and only finds my old one which of cause since it has been factory reset it no longer has the printer drivers or anything connected to it. How can I reset these settings to allow only my new laptop to be picked up my the printer.

@albingham1990,

Good Day.  Thank you for taking an interest in the HP community. I understand that you require assistance regarding issues with the printer not scanning to the correct location on your new notebook. I will be really glad to assist you here. 🙂

Fabulous description and superb diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that.

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • What makes you state that the printer is trying to locate the old notebook to scan or save scans?
  • Did you scan from multiple apps?
  • Do you get any error messages?
  • Please share a screenshot or an image of what exactly happens when you try to scan to assist you correctly.

For now, try these steps:

  • Perform a hard reset on the printer from this link: https://hp.care/2h9EPuh and follow instructions from the section “Step 1: Reset the printer

Then uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers at the root level by following these steps:

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, in control panel and select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then download the latest full feature driver from  https://hp.care/2F8gS02 and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

  • This should fix the issue. Now check for issue resolution. If it continues, please update the printer firmware also by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2rHKwDD

Use different apps to scan.

  • Link 1: https://hp.care/2fAFYxE (HP Printers - Using the HP Scan and Capture App (Windows 8 and 10) The HP Scan and Capture app is an awesome app to scan to your computer.
  • It gives you steps to download, install and use the app with FAQs.
  •
  • Link 2: https://hp.care/2hmgdBr (HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Windows 10) The same goes for the HP Smart App which is really a smart app as you can print and scan from it.
  •
  • Link 3: https://hp.care/2w35jHM (HP Printers - How to Scan (Windows)

This link gives you everything that you need to know about scanning from HP printers. It is a very useful link. It gives several options. Check these options:

  • How do I perform a first-time scanner setup?
  • How do I scan documents or photos into the computer?
  • How do I save multi-page documents or multiple photos into a single PDF file?
  • How do I change the default folder scans save to?
  • Are other scanning apps or methods available?
  • What if I cannot scan from the printer or a connection error displays?

Perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
