hmmm that is a good thought. My MacBook is 2015 (due but like you holding out!), the operating system is Monterey 12.7

My issue with the HP printer started after the most recent MacBook update....so I wonder if HP just aren't keeping their software compatible enough with Apple upgrades, hence just remove scan to computer function.

You should be a consultant on HP issues as you have come up with more practical reasoning than anyone else!!

HP support should be reaching out when this issue is reported!

LOL, I'm a common sense logical thinker.

Both HP and Apple are massive corporations....think about it?  There is no sense or logic that HP would kick Apple to the curb, just think about the money at stake.

Have to take into consideration the agents one speaks with.  Communicating with an HP agent is informative in the sense of recognizing their knowledge so when a support agent says that HP isn't supporting Mac any further....for real?

Pushing them to actually make sense of what they are telling you is difficult.

In many cases it's a feeling like they just want to get you offline, so you have to push them to actually have a logical thought as well....it's a chore.

Anyway, hoping I'll get a final answer soon from HP to confirm or not the older MacOS driver support.

Agree Angela!!!

My thought is that I think the customer at minimum deserves to be informed rather than leaving everyone to go through all this frustration.

What about anyone that depends everyday on working with this scanning process.....how much hair you going to have left at the end of the first day.  After a couple days trying to resolve the issue..............

It took two hours through typing communication with an HP agent to come to a conclusion that made absolutely no sense or logic.

I was told sorry, and sorry for the inconvenience, lol

Anyway that's all I have for you today.

For anyone that may be following this thread I have some new information that may be helpful and shed some light on the 'Scan to Computer' issue you may be having.

On Tuesday, October 10/2023 I spent in excess of two hours on the phone with HP Support. (This was only one of other conversations with other agents through multiple hours to help resolve this matter)

After more than two hours the HP Support Agent I was speaking with worked diligently to find any if not all issues that may be causing this printer error/issue.  I will add that this HP Agent worked through my MacBook remotely to help find and resolve the issue. (The Agent informed me that her training with with Apple products)

After uninstalling and installing numerous softwares related to the HP 7740 Officejet, Wide Format Printer and my MacBook Pro, using Catalina 10.15.7 it was finally determined that the issue according to HP is an issue that needs to be resolved through Apple itself with their software drivers. (The agent said that HP still supports printer driver updates to MacOS back as far as High Sierra)

According to HP's Software Engineers that my Support Agent was also communicating with stated that the reason the 'Scan to Computer' option is not available is because Apple has not provided the drivers necessary to use this printer option.

Apparently Apple, for security reasons will not allow Non Apple Drivers for this purpose, (and of course we are all concerned with security) Apple requires End Back Security.  HP's Engineers also tried on their end to install necessary drivers through their test of this matter and Apple would not allow it.

The HP Agent also stated that this has been a known issue for a little while now and is why the HP Smart App was provided to allow scanning to your computer without the need of Apple drivers needed to use the 'Scan to Computer' option. (It's no secret that the HP Smart App although helpful to scan documents is no replacement to the 'Scan to Computer' option. Substantially more time is required to use it, frustrating and aggravating to say the least is just not a well made replacement to the "Scan to Computer' option - in my personal opinion)

It was also pointed out that this matter is not just reflected on Hewlett Packard Printers but other printer manufactures as well.

The HP Agent said that Apple's HP Utility and Easy Start App began being made unavailable back in 2020.  Anyone will tell you that the HP Utility was the goto location to reset the 'Scan to Computer' option but it is no longer an available option in fact it doesn't communicate with the printer now. (Going to HP Embedded Web Page - Settings indicates as well that using 'Scan to Computer' is not an option.

Furthermore,  Image Capture which is an Apple App installed on my MacBook Pro when I purchased it, does not provide an overview scan of anything, nor does it function any longer. It also will not communicate with the printer.

The HP Agent stated that slowly over time the drivers necessary to do certain aspects of scanning and or printing are slowly being withdrawn from your access.

I'll tell you that the HP Agent which I was speaking was awesome absolutely, and stated that she would follow up with me with a phone call the following day to see how my conversation went with Apple as I had called them immediately after speaking with HP to see if I was able to find any other information and or resolution.  As it turned out the Apple Agent, who was also extremely pleasant to speak with could not provide any aid in the situation and directed me to the closest Genius Bar to my location.

I'll say that I have been a huge Apple/Mac/iPhone fan for many years since switching from Windows. Just recently I was into the Apple store looking to upgrade and purchase the new MacBook Pro together with a new iPhone 15 Pro, unfortunately after this most recent concerning issue it seems I may have to re-evaluate where I spend my money.

It is my hope that Apple....provided this is all an Apple matter can get it together and resolve it.

Well... Same problem here. Scan to computer not working anymore after a HP firmware update. So it looks to me as if Apple has nothing to do with it. Not the first time people are having problems after HP updating firmware i.e. not being able to print anymore when using non HP branded cartridges, not being able to print anymore when using HP branded cartridges with a 'past expiration date', ... The HP 7740 is the best printer I have ever owned, but HP regularly breaks its functionality (deliberately?) by updating software/firmware.

HP has already faced numerous legal actions over its printers and printer ink cartridges and diminishing their capabilities. The latest class action against HP is about bricking it's all-in-one printers ability to scan/fax when one of the ink-cartridges is low on ink.

So... HP blaming another company for the change of functionality of their printers after a - HP-developed - firmware update causes me to be a little suspicious to say the least.

Still, I hope that HP will find a way to resolve the 'scan to computer' issue. It was one of the best features OF THE PRINTER & ON THE PRINTER: being able to select to scan to which computer, being able to select the output format, being able to select single or double sided, auto detection of the source (feeder/flatbed)... all this was done on the scanner itself!

This last Tuesday, 24 October 2023, my wife and I had a similar issue with our HP7740 (which we have owned for more than five years). I was resetting the paper settings at the printer's control panel and was prompted to install the latest firmware, which I did. About 10 minutes before that my wife had scanned one page from her MacBook (the most current OS) using HP Easy Scan app. After the firmware update the HP Easy Scan app could no longer communicate with the printer. I tried it from my MacBook Pro (the most current OS) and had the same problem. We have never used any other method to scan than the HP Easy Scan app with good success. This time we ended up using the scan-to-USB feature on the printer's control panel.

Keith-7740, I really appreciate all the work you have done with HP and Apple to find a resolution to this issue. Having done that level of effort with different service providers (including my own company's support team) I understand how frustrating and time consuming it is to get an issue addressed by knowledgable, skilled support staff. Thank you for that and for your willingness to share your experience with the rest of us. I am interested to hear another update, if you ever get one.

To regain the function, you have to downgrade the printer.

I did it and it works very well.

Thank you very much! That worked.

Do you still have the firmware on your computer? The file is no longer on MegaUpload.
