HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer
Other

I have a Mac OS (not listed above) 14.1.2 and a HP OfficeJet Pro 8740. Two, in fact. I have the same printer at my office. I have always been able to "Scan to Computer" from the screen ON the printer... now on my home printer I get a message that says I need to enable it... with instructions of how to do so... which are outdated because HP Utility won't even work for me right now... so I end up using HP Smart or HP Easy Scan. Long story short.... I can still do this at my office on the same printer... but not at home. When I go to enable it, "Scan to Computer" is not even an option to enable anymore... IF I can even get to a page that shows me that option... it only gives me a Webscan option. What happened? Can we please add the Scan to Computer option back into the firmware? I can still do it at my office - again, same printer, same computer... it just probably hasn't been update... I also can use any print/scan doctor that I keep getting pushed to on the "support" pages because it's for windows only...

I do a LOT of scanning for documentation for my business... the extra step of using the on screen scanner is time consuming and very inconvenient when I could just hit a button on the printer screen before. 😞

Hi @JenGagnon,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you are facing an issue with the "Scan to Computer" feature on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 printer at home. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem.

  • Update Firmware and Software: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can check for firmware updates on the HP support website. Additionally, make sure you have the latest HP printer software and drivers installed on your Mac.
  • HP Easy Start: Use the HP Easy Start application to set up your printer. This tool can help you install the latest software and configure your printer. You can download it from the official HP website.
  • Reinstall HP Utility: If HP Utility is not working properly, try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Ensure you are using the latest version compatible with your macOS.
  • Check Printer Settings: On the printer control panel, navigate to the settings or setup menu. Look for any option related to scanning or connectivity. Ensure that the "Scan to Computer" option is enabled.
  • Reset Printer Settings: Sometimes, resetting the printer to its default settings can resolve configuration issues. Refer to your printer's user manual for instructions on how to reset the settings.
  • Alternative Scanning Methods: While you work on resolving the issue, continue using HP Smart or HP Easy Scan as alternatives for scanning documents.
  • Network Configuration: Ensure that your printer and computer are on the same network. If there are any network-related issues, it might affect the "Scan to Computer" functionality.

Remember that HP periodically releases firmware and software updates to enhance performance and fix issues, so keeping everything up to date is crucial.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
