How do I reduce/compress PDF file size from scanned document - HP Photosmart Premium

Hi Guys,

I just bought a HP  M1217nfw MFP, being a real estate agent, where i have to scan 20 pages per document, and the scan function with 75 dpi and output to a pdf document gives me a file of 14 Mbytes. There is no way i can send this via email. I used to be able to scan 20 pages with the HP Officejet into a much smaller file.

Any help would be appreciated on how i can get small sized scanned files. My alternative is to take back the printer to Staples

Hi,

I have a HP Laserjet M1136 MP Printer, when ever i scan any Document in PDF format the size of the scanned document becomes 1 MB. How should i reduse the Size of the scanned Document?

I have tried to reduse the resolution but the document is not clear to becomes blure.

Please Help me wiht this....

Hello, 

I see that you're having an issue with the printer.

After selecting Scan to PDF, click on Advance Option. Here in the new window which opens at the top you can see PDF as selected. Beside this "Options" button will be there. Click on it and a slider will appear. It will be at maximum. so you need to move the slider to minimum or closer to that and click OK Try scanning. 

This will reduce the file size.

In the context of scanning a document to PDF, can ayone explain the difference between "output resolution (ppi)" located in the Advanced Document Settings and the "Image Quality" slider located in the "PDF Options" (as described by several people, including lions99 above)?

Are the two settings related (ppi vs. the image quality slider)?  Are they independent of one another? 

My general understanding is that a higher ppi will result in better resolution/quality of the scanned PDF (with a corrolary increase in file size).  The way it's being explained, it sounds like the "Image quality" slider bar is being used for the same purpose (i.e. decreasing file size).  I'm not sure of the interplay going on between the two settings. 

Further confusing myself, I just scanned the same one-page document to PDF twice as a test - for both scans resolution was set at 200 ppi, but for one scan I set the "image quality" slider at "low" and the other I set the slider at "high."  The scanned pdf with the image quality slider set on "low" was 1KB larger in file size than the scanned PDF with image qualty slider set on "high" (22KB vs. 21 KB, respectively).

Any clarification regarding the differences in function between the ppi resolution setting and the "image quality" slider setting would be much appreciated.

The resolution improves quality by adding dots per inch - simplemathematics. The image quality is to do with the compression method used and is harder to predict how much it will reduce the file size. The routine looks at the other pixels surrounding a given pixel and compares how similar they are. If they are similar, they all get saved together as one piece of information. This means that images with large areas of blank space, or areas with the same or similar colour/shade, can be compressed a lot, whereas images with lots of detail and contrast, like a close-spaced, dense text image, will not be compressed so much.
