When I scan a document, save as PDF, and open it (using Nitro Pro 10), Nitro Pro asks if I want to make the text searchable. This tells me that HP Smart did not do so. The results of many internet searches (including https://hp-officejet-pro-8600.printerdoc.net/en/scan/scanning-documents-as-editable-text/to-scan-doc... ) tell me that I should be able to save the file as a searchable PDF, but I haven't found out how to get HP Smart to do so.

Hi,
OCR is not supported for your printer when using HP Smart, it is supported with the full feature software, however.
First, click Start > Settings (gear icon) > Devices > Printers & Scanners, click your pritner name and select Remove Device.
Next, download and install the HP Full Feature Software below, among the IRIC OCR option:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL40120/bi-108858-4/OJ8600_1316.exe
Open the HP Officejet Pro 8600 software and select Scan a document or photo, from there select Save as editable text.
