Hi @Maudlin

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your printer setup got a bit tangled in the process! Here’s how you can share your printer between your iMac and HP computer while troubleshooting the scanning issue:

Sharing the Printer on macOS Catalina

Enable Printer Sharing on iMac

  • Go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing.
  • Scroll down and turn on Printer Sharing.
  • Select the printer you want to share and adjust permissions.

Ensure Both Computers Are on the Same Network

  • Your HP computer should be connected to the same Wi-Fi or local network as your iMac.

Install the Correct Printer Drivers on HP

  • Download and install the latest drivers for your printer from HP’s official website.

Fixing the Scanning Issue on iMac

Since scanning worked on HP but stopped on iMac, try these steps:

  1. Restart the Printer and Both Computers
    • Power cycle everything to refresh connections.
  2. Check Scanner Settings on iMac
    • Open Image Capture or Preview and see if the scanner is detected.
  3. Reinstall Printer Drivers on iMac
    • Remove the printer from System Settings > Printers & Scanners, then re-add it.
  4. Reset Printing System on macOS
    • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners, right-click in the printer list, and select Reset Printing System.

For more details, you can check Apple’s guide.
