HP OfficeJet 4655 All-in-one Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just purchased the above printer. i want to convert documents that have been scanned into files that I can modify without reentering all the data.

I downloaded all the software for the printer. The start menu has an item which leads to a page that says the I.R.I.S - OCR software as been registerd, but when i click on the link, I am taken to a page for upgrading the software.

If the printer comes with the OCR software, how do I use it? It not, do I have to buy it?

@LesLV, thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

Thanks for sharing the details.

I have checked the specifications of your printer and I do see that OCR software is included with your printer.

It looks like you have not installed the full feature printer software on your PC due to you have issues converting the documents using OCR.

Please try the steps recommended below to uninstall and reinstall the full feature printer software on your PC.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Select OK.

Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

Close Devices and Printers.

Link to update the full feature printer software.

Also, From the printer home screen select "scan", "computer", select name of the computer, in the first selection of printer screen. select "scan shortcut", "save as editable text (OCR)", "start scan"

Also, you can try scanning using HP smart app.

Hi! @LesLV, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you are trying to convert the scanned documents on your printer but the OCR software is asking you to upgrade the software.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Please provide the printer model name and the operating system running on your PC to assist you better.

As you mentioned you are trying to convert the scanned documents on your printer but the OCR software is asking you to upgrade the software.

During the installation process, it will check your printer to see you have PAID for the software or not. If you have not paid for the software, it won't activate.

You have to purchase the readiris pro software to edit the scanned documents.

For document and image scan jobs, the scanner essentially creates a photograph of the item. You can change the appearance, quality, and colors of the scan, but you cannot edit, copy, or remove any text. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software analyzes the shapes of letters in the item being scanned, and then creates an editable Text (TXT) or Rich Text file (RTF) document file.

OCR software from HP or a third-party vendor must be installed on your computer to use this feature. Open HP Scan software on the computer, and then look for a Save as Editable Text (OCR) shortcut.

  • If the shortcut displays, select it to scan the item as a document that you can edit.

  • If the shortcut does not display, your printer did not ship with HP OCR software. You can install software from a third-party vendor such as OmniPage, FineReader, or Readiris. Consult the vendor support information to see if your printer is compatible and for steps to use the software.

For a valid printer, you can see the following option when scanned.

Thanks for replying. I just purchased the HP OfficeJet 4655 late last week. I haven't changed anything other than those required to set-up the machine.

The specs for the printer as detailed at store.hp.com/us/en/vwa/printers/segm=Home;prnttyp=Print-scan-copy-and-fax includes the following statement:

     SOFTWARE INCLUDED
HP Printer Software, HP Update, OCR, HP Photo Creations

I do not understand why I must purchase the software if the specs say it is included with the printer.
