My scanner stopped working in the middle of a scan and an error message came up "scanner has become damaged" and then I was told to turn off the printer or unplug it then turn it back on, and I still get the same message. In fact, it comes up immediately when the printer is powered on. I've done the unplug, press power button for 15 seconds plug in and it still gives me the same message. Will a factory reset solve this issue, and if so, how do I do that. How can I test the scanner to see if it really is a hardware problem? Thanks for your response.

@GinnyLee52, Welcome to HP Support Community!
There might be a hardware related issue such as a scanner mechanism jam or calibration issue, low scanner bulb temperature, or an internal or external electrical problem.
-
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer, disconnect the power cord from the power source, and then wait 30 seconds.
-
If you are using a power strip or multi-plug adapter, connect the cord directly to a wall outlet to make sure the printer is getting enough power.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the printer, and then try making a copy.
-
If the error still displays, connect the printer to a different wall outlet to determine if the original outlet is causing the issue.
-
If the error still displays with a different wall outlet, partially lift the scanner lid, and then press the Copy button or icon. check for the light to move.
-
Additionally, Update the printer firmware
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
