HP Recommended

HP Smart Tank 7301 All-in-One. My major complain is the scanned image is smaller than the original image. My previous Officejet scanned image is exactly the same size as the original when printed out.

I have tried different settings. My setting is 300 dpi, 8.5x11 inch paper size. I have tried both pdf and jpg file type, no compression, both detect edges checked or unchecked, print with borderless on or off, scaling "crop" or "shrink to fit". If I tried 600 dpi, it will take super long time to scan, and 1200 dpi will take forever to scan. If I scanned with 600 dpi and saved the image, it will print junk for many pages, and it messed up my regular document printing capability even I rebooted both the printer and computer. After about 8 to 10 hours, it will self recover and I can start doing my regular document printing again.

I have returned the printer and get a new one, but it still having exactly the same symptoms. I have checked the firmware version, it is the latest firmware. Anyone can help? Very much appreciated.

@chia0042, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you're facing some frustrating scanning issues with your HP Smart Tank 7301 All-in-One printer, particularly with the scanned image being smaller than the original. Since you’ve already tried various settings and even returned the printer once, it seems like there could be an underlying issue with the software, scanning settings, or even a compatibility issue with your PC or the scanning software. Let’s go over some potential fixes and troubleshooting steps to help resolve this:

Check Scan Settings in HP Smart App

The HP Smart app, which is commonly used to scan and manage the printer, might have some default settings that are causing the issue.

Open HP App: Open the HP app on your computer.

Select the Scan option: Click on the Scan button.

Check the Page Size: Ensure that the page size is set correctly (8.5 x 11 inches for letter-size paper). Double-check that there is no auto-detection of page size that could be shrinking it.

Scaling Settings: Ensure that the “Shrink to Fit” or “Auto Size” options aren’t enabled. These can sometimes cause the scanned image to shrink automatically. Try selecting “Actual Size” or “100%”.

Adjust Scan Resolution (DPI)

You mentioned you tried different DPI settings. While 300 DPI is usually good for standard documents, it’s possible there’s a scaling issue that arises at certain resolutions.

Try Lower DPI: You might want to try 200 or 150 DPI and see if the scaling issue persists. High DPI values like 600 and 1200 are great for detailed images, but as you’ve noted, they significantly increase scan times and may cause instability.

Scan at 300 DPI and 100% Size: When scanning, set it to 300 DPI with a size of 8.5x11 inches and ensure the scaling option is set to “Actual Size” or 100%. Avoid using "Shrink to Fit" or any cropping options.

Check Printer Firmware & Software

Since you've mentioned you have the latest firmware, there might be a problem with the scanning software or drivers.

Update Drivers: Even though the firmware is up to date, make sure that the scanning software and printer drivers on your computer are also the latest version. You can download the latest drivers from the HP Support website.

Reinstall HP App: Sometimes, an app or driver can become corrupted. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the HP app, as well as any relevant printer drivers.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
