HP Smart
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

I'm using an HP Envy 7855 printer and HP Smart on a MAC, Big Sur 11.5.  When scanning using HP Smart, the settings are set for Photo, yet when saving the image after scanning, it defaults to PDF.  I can't find anyplace to change this setting. You would think the app would be smart enough to default to JPG when set to scan a Photo. Is this a design flaw, bug, or am I missing something?

Thank you.

No, you are not really missing anything.

As an application, HP Smart is in some ways brilliant.

When compared to full blown file processing and print software, the application is pretty limited in some areas.

If you want a not-brilliant method to at least force the format

AND

You are willing to create an HP Smart Shortcut that saves to one of a few Cloud based locations,

You can create an HP Smart Shortcut to save the file to the selected Cloud location as an image file.

The shortcut does do the essentials of what you want:  Save as .jpg / image file.

You have to sacrifice control over the location.

Meh.

The following example was just created to illustrate editing / creating a shortcut to save as PDF.

The example is from HP Smart Windows.

I think HP Smart Mac is similar.

If not, apologies offered to having wasted our time...

To save as image instead of PDF

Change your selection in the second example plate to save the file / format as an image file.

Finally

If you enable to "Quick Action" bits at the bottom of the Shortcut / Edit Shortcut options, you can call the shortcut, use the Presets saved in that shortcut and skip some of the "after scan" processing bits.

HP Smart Shortcuts (formally Smart Tasks) for Windows and HP Smart Mobile

Where available, Smart Tasks can be configured for several print tasks.

  • Print: Send a print job to your printer.
  • Email: Send an email message or attachments.
  • Save to: Save a file to a cloud storage account, such as Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive.

In the case of the example,

The scan ends up in OneDrive > HP Smart > Scan
