HP env 7640
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I purchased and installed the HP Envy  7640.  It works great.  Only problem is that when calls come in that are not answered the fax signal kicks in and and callers can't leave a message.  I know that I can add a line for faxes but is there a way to set up the Envy such that callers caa leave messages or send faxes on the same line.

Hi @golf4431,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you need assistance with your HP Envy printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any changes on the printer before the issue started?

When was the last time it worked?

To set the number of rings before answering

1. From the printer control panel display, touch Setup .

2. Touch Fax Setup , and then touch Preferences .

3. Touch Rings to Answer .

4. Touch the number of rings.

5. Touch Done to accept the setting.

To change the answer ring pattern for distinctive ring

1. Verify that the printer is set to answer fax calls automatically.

2. From the printer control panel display, touch Setup .

3. Touch Fax Setup , and then select Preferences .

4. Touch Distinctive Ring .

5. A message appears stating that this setting should not be changed unless you have multiple numbers on the same telephone line. Touch Yes to continue.

6. Do one of the following:

● Touch the ring pattern assigned by your telephone company to fax calls.

● Touch Ring Pattern Detection, and then follow the instructions on the printer control panel.

For more assistance, please go through the User guide of your printer and then scroll down to Chapter 6 - Fax page number 47.

Alternatively, you can also go through the steps suggested in the support document for - HP Printers - How to Fax

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

This is a new printer so it may well be that I set it up wrong.  Since I set it up, it rings along with my phone on each call.  My answering machine picks up on the seventh or eight ring.  After giving our message and when it goes to receive a message, all you get is the fax signal.    No one can leave a message since the fax comes on.  Not sure how to change this so I can get message on my house answering machine and also receive faxes on the same line.
