HP Document - How to Scan

HP Printers - How to Scan (Windows, Mac, Mobile) | HP® Customer Support

Easier answer

First part...

Do not increase the resolution / DPI when you scan the item on the flatbed (glass).

What does that mean?

Scan the photo at its original size and save it.

That means -

  • If you have a 2x2 inch photo that you wish to scan, place the photo on the flatbed, scan it at the default settings, and save.
  • If you have a 4x6 inch photo - scan the photo at it's original size and save it.

Next,

If the photo is the wrong shape, it can be cropped to match the shape you need ( square ).

  • Most apps and software programs can crop an image into a shape.
  • Cropping is easy -- Assuming there is any "extra" unneeded bits in the original photo, the photo can be made to the right shape.

If the photo is too large at its original size, it can be Transformed > "Resized"

Important - This is the tricky part...

The Accuracy of the Resize action depends on the application / software you use to resize the photo.

======================================================

Resolution / DPI -

Side Bar >> More about Resolution

If this section does not make sense or does not apply to your situation, ignore it.

Increasing the resolution / DPI creates a larger file size and a larger image when viewed at 100% of that photo's size.

Scanning a poor (low density) photo at a higher resolution creates a pixelated finished product.

Scanning a high quality image and increasing the resolution can produce unexpected results.

General Example - Paint - Scan - DPI / Resolution Comparison 600 / 300 DPI

Paint_Scan_300-600_DPI_2Paint_Scan_300-600_DPI_2

Secondary Answer - Resize / Resample

Scan and save the photo at it's original size.

If needed, reshape (Crop) the original to match the shape you want -- square

Resize the photo to the size you want --  2 x 2 inches

If you are using HP Smart, the app can edit scanned photos or imported (previously saved) photo tiles.

There is a "square" crop shape that you could use to force the scanned / imported photo into the right shape.

The size, if it is not already at the size you need (2x2 inches) is tougher using this app -- there is no "select size" option.

You can resize the image but it must be done manually - that is, you have to guess at the size and pinch the new shape.

Not ideal.

Look for an app or program that will do what you want...

Relevant to Windows

Open the scanned photo file (.jpg) in a photo editing application or software that can Resize / Resample the content and save the photo in the new size.

Example - Irfanview - Print / Save Image - Resize / Resample

Irfanview_Print_Image_Resize_Resample_2Irfanview_Print_Image_Resize_Resample_2
