HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer

Suddenly my scanner does not work anymore. I can print, but every time I try to scan, it says that "the scan is in use". I also can not make copies.

Hi @Mila2025

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 scanner is stuck in a busy state, preventing scans and copies. Here are some steps to resolve this:

Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1: Restart Printer & Computer

  • Turn off your printer and computer.
  • Unplug the printer for 60 seconds, then reconnect it.
  • Restart your computer and test scanning again.

Step 2: Reset the Printer

  1. Unplug the printer from the power source.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on.

Step 3: Check Scanner Bar Functionality

  • Open the scanner lid and press Copy.
  • If the scanner bar does not move or light up, it may indicate a hardware issue.

Step 4: Reinstall Printer Software

  1. Open Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Remove the printer and restart your computer.
  3. Download and reinstall the latest HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 drivers from HP’s support page.

Let me know what results you get, and I can refine the approach further! Hopefully, we can get your scanner working again.

Hi Hawks, thank you for your answer but, after trying all the steps, I still have the same problem.

And when I restart the printer I always have a message: "turn your printer off and on again"....

@Mila2025, I see you were interacting with @Hawks_Eye however, he's away for now and I'd love to help you out!

Please try a few more steps to resolve the issue:

Check for Stuck Scan Jobs

Sometimes, old or frozen scan tasks block new ones.

Open HP Smart or HP Scan app.

Cancel any pending scan or copy jobs.

Restart the printer and try scanning again.

Check Windows Services (for PC)

Sometimes a system service may not be running.

Press Windows + R → type services.msc → Enter.

Scroll to Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

Make sure it’s Running and set to Automatic.

If not, right-click → Properties → Start it and set to Automatic.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
