Hi @Jo121212

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If your HP Photosmart Premium 309 is giving you the error "Function is not available" in the HP Smart app on your Android phone when trying to scan, it’s likely due to a combination of compatibility limitations and app functionality. Here's what you need to know and how to fix or work around it:

HP Smart app requires printers with “web services” (like HP ePrint) enabled.
Your Photosmart C309 does not support web services – so scan functions in HP Smart are not supported.

Workarounds / Solutions:

1. Use a PC or Mac Instead

If you have access to a Windows or Mac computer:

Install HP Scan or HP Solution Center (older software).

Use a USB or Wi-Fi connection.

Scan through that software instead.

2. Try a Different Mobile App (Not HP Smart)

Some users report success with third-party apps:

NokoPrint

PrintHand

Mopria Print/Scan Service

Compatibility is not guaranteed, but some of these may allow scanning if your device and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network.

3. Scan to Memory Card or USB (Directly from Printer)

The C309 has built-in options for scanning to SD card or USB drive:

Insert a memory card or USB stick.

Use the printer's touchscreen to initiate a scan.

Retrieve the scanned file directly from the storage device.

4. Check Webscan (If Enabled)

Type your printer’s IP address in a browser (from a device on the same network).

See if Webscan is available under the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Navigate to: http://<printer-ip-address>

Look under Scan or Webscan tab.

If available, scan directly from a web browser.

Make sure Webscan is enabled in EWS settings.

Let me know if you’d like steps on using the HP scan software on your PC or enabling Webscan—I’m happy to help you get that working smoothly!
