I dont know how to scan on my HP Officejet 5255

Ive had my HP Officejet 5255 for several years. I print and copy a lot but I have never scanned. Now I need to scan but am getting a message to go to hp.com set to download software. Didnt I already do that years ago when i bought this?  So, how do I scan??  I feel really dumb! Thanks for any help.

The printer supports single side document scanning using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

HP Scan (part of the full driver printer software) includes 2-sided manual scan support.

The Full Feature Software includes the HP Scan program that can be used to scan.

Did you already install the software?  Likely, but there are other ways to use the printer, including HP Smart (application that supports print and scan for PDF and Photos / Images).

Full driver printer software installed?

You can check -- Open the Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features -- look for the printer in the list of installed programs / software.

If the software is not installed

OR

If, for any reason, you no longer have the HP Scan shortcut (or it does  not work),

then

The printer software can be (re)installed.

If the Full Feature Software is not installed, do that, that is, install the printer software

OR

If the Full Feature Software is installed but not working, Uninstall software > Restart > Install fresh software

HP Smart - the application from  Microsoft Store  -  is available to print and scan PDF and Photos / Image files.

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver adds at least two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant and HP Scan. If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver. No Sign-in required.

Uninstall the full driver printer software from Programs and Features

Restart computer and Sign in

Install a new copy of the Full Feature Software

Restart computer and Sign in

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least two shortcuts to the Desktop.

Note:  HP Scan is not installed (only) when the printer supports Scan.

When needed / wanted, enable "Scan to Computer" using the Printer Assistant

Open the Printer Assistant shortcut > Tab Scan > Manage Scan to Computer > Enable
