Hi @Yolanda25,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A black line down the middle of scanned documents typically indicates an issue with the scanner's hardware or software. Here are steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue with your HP printer:

1. Clean the Scanner Glass

**1.1. Turn Off the Printer

  • Power Off: Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged to prevent any electrical hazards or damage.

**1.2. Clean Scanner Glass

  • Clean Cloth: Use a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Wipe Glass: Gently clean the scanner glass. Pay special attention to the area where the black line appears.
  • Dry Glass: Wipe the glass dry with a clean, dry cloth.

**1.3. Check for Residue

  • Inspect Glass: Ensure there is no residue or smudges on the scanner glass. Even small particles can cause lines on scanned documents.

2. Inspect the Scanner Components

**2.1. Check Scanner Assembly

  • Scanner Bed: Open the scanner lid and check for any obstructions or dust on the scanner bed or the underside of the lid.
  • Clean Rollers: If accessible, clean any rollers or components inside the scanner.

**2.2. Check the Scanner Lens

  • Lens Inspection: Look for any dirt or smudges on the scanner lens (if visible). Clean gently if necessary.

3. Run Printer Diagnostics

**3.1. Use Printer Software

  • HP Printer Software: Open the HP Printer Assistant or HP Smart app and run the diagnostics or cleaning utilities provided.
  • Follow Instructions: The software may provide specific cleaning or calibration instructions.

**3.2. Perform a Test Scan

  • Test Document: Try scanning a test document to see if the issue persists.

4. Update Printer Firmware

**4.1. Check for Updates

  • Firmware Update: Ensure your printer firmware is up-to-date, as firmware updates can sometimes address scanning issues.
  • Update via HP Smart App:
    • Open HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant.
    • Look for Firmware Update and follow the instructions to check for and install any updates.

5. Reset Printer

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
