@Chuckie64, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

It's great to hear that your HP DeskJet 4158e is printing fine from your Dell laptop. Let's get the scanning issue sorted out. Here are a few steps to help you scan successfully:

Ensure Full Software is Installed

Make sure you have the HP Smart app installed, which includes both printing and scanning functionality.

Once installed, open HP Smart and check if your printer is listed. If not, click “Add Printer” and follow the prompts.

Try Scanning via HP Smart

  • Open HP Smart.
  • Click on “Scan”.
  • Choose your scan settings and click “Scan”.
  • Save or share the scanned document as needed.

Check Windows Scan App

You can also try using the built-in Windows Scan app:

  • Download from Microsoft Store: Windows Scan App
  • Open the app and select your printer.
  • Try scanning a document.

Verify Scanner Driver

Sometimes the scanner driver may not install correctly. To check:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer > Scan Properties.
  • If you see an error or missing driver, reinstall the full driver package from: Official HP® Support

Check Connection Type

  • If you're using Wi-Fi, ensure the printer and laptop are on the same network.
  • If using USB, try a different port and ensure the cable is securely connected.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
