I have recently purchased an HP 8710.
It won't scan to computer.
I have been to the Manage Scan to Computer and checked scan to computer is enabled and the "always enable" box is clicked. I have tried disabling then enabling again.
I have reinstalled the software, I have two installations of the printer on my machine - one USB, one via internet. I have made sure that sharing is allowed on my internet settings.
When I enable scan to computer, my error message states that Scan to Computer is not available and the computer can't connect to the device. It recommends I use the doctor to fix the problem.
I have tried Scan and Print Doctor 5.1 and asked it to fix scanning. On the doctor, Step 2 is Finding and Fixing Problems. This has 8 stages. The doctor cannot complete the fifth, which is Windows (WIA) Scan. This applies for both of the printer installations.
What can I do - is returning the printer to the retailer the only option?
Please help someone!

Hi @RogerSmyth
You mentioned Win 10 updates - that could have messed up some settings or parameters.
Besdies scanning to USB Thumbdrive, try Scan to Email. (at least, it'll be on your computer)

Hi,
Thanks for using the HP Forums.
Please Uninstall and Reinstall the FULL feature software following these steps:
1. Uninstall the software in your computer
Go to Control Panel, under ‘Program and Features’, look for the HP SW and click uninstall.
To remove print drivers, you can go to ‘Devices and Printers’, look for the printer that is installed.
Right-click on the printer icon, and select ‘Remove device’. This step should remove the printer.
To ensure that the print driver is indeed uninstalled, on the same screen, click on any other printer icon, and select ‘Print server properties’.
Go to ‘Drivers’ tab, and see if you find the printer model name. If it exists, select it, and click ‘Remove’.
This should remove the print driver.
2. Download and save the FULL feature software (do not install it online)
The following resource will help you :

Key in your printer model, Operating System and download & install the FULL feature software.
3. Install the FULL feature “Saved” software
Once you have downloaded and installed the FULL feature software, you will be able to print and scan.
Try enabling "Scan to computer" again.

Thanks for the help, Provost.
I have followed your instructions as best I can. I uninstalled the software and removed the devise, downloaded the software again and and reinstalled it. However, I didn't get the option - implied in your message - of saving the program without installing.
One problem was that, along the way, I got a message saying that there is no driver set for Windows 10 64 Bit version. So I used the stepped guide through. This gave me software to download. Now it's all installed, printing well.
And the screen on the printer recognises this computer.
When I go to Manage Scan to Computer I am allowed to enable scanning to computer.
Then, clicking the icon for the scan menu, I receive an errort message saying the the printer is NOT connected.
I can (and am reduced to) scan to USB drive - that's a VERY poor second when I used to use scan to computer on a HP4500.
Looking through the list of recent questions on this site, I see many people complaining they can't work scanning in Windows 10. So I am assuming that parts of the HP software is incompatible with Windows 10 64 Bit. Is that correct? If so, how long till you develop a fix? Your instruction sheets suggest that an 8710 WILL work with Windows 10.
It looks like I may have to keep my primitive old HP printer so as to scan!
Any last advice?
