I am trying to scan a document.  I have a new computer but already have an HP Smart app.  I can print and copy but when I try to scan, my printer says "Install HP Easy Start".  Why do I need to install another program?  I have the HP Smart App but cannot figure out how to scan a document.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @TanyaTuxedo

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the situation—I'm really sorry scanning isn’t working smoothly with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e. You’re absolutely right to expect scanning to work directly through the HP Smart app, especially since you can already print and copy.

Let’s walk through a focused fix to get scanning working without confusion.

Why You're Seeing “Install HP Easy Start”

The message appears because:

  • Your new computer may not have the full scan driver installed yet.
  • HP Smart can print and copy using basic drivers, but scanning requires the full feature set, which is normally installed via HP Easy Start.

HP Easy Start is not a separate app—it’s a one-time installer that ensures your printer has full functionality, including scanning.

Step-by-Step Fix: Enable Scanning in HP Smart

1. Download HP Easy Start (One-Time Setup)

This installs the scan driver and links it to HP Smart.

2. Open HP Smart and Add Scan Tile

  • Launch HP Smart.
  • If your printer is listed, click it.
  • Click the “+” icon to add tiles.
  • Add the Scan tile if it’s missing.

Once the scan driver is installed, the tile becomes active.

3. Scan a Document

  • Click the Scan tile.
  • Choose Document Feeder or Scanner Glass.
  • Select PDF or JPEG, resolution, and color settings.
  • Click Scan, then Save or Share.

Let me know if the scan tile doesn’t appear after installing Easy Start—I’ll guide you further. You’re doing everything right by catching this early—I’ll stay with you until scanning works perfectly.
