"scan something using my app" does not tell us a lot -- it might be enough.
In general, the following is true:
Do you have to pay to scan?
Other than using some sort of third party application that requires that you purchase or subscribe to the app, the general answer is No, you do not have to pay to scan.
The applications you can install and / or you are already using depend on your device (computer, tablet, phone) and its Operating System / version.
HP scan applications and software for your printer are provided for their respective Operating Systems free of charge.
For example - Free Apps
HP Smart for supported versions of Windows
HP Smart for Mobile (Tablet / iPhone)
Third party scan software might certainly want to charge you to install or use their apps.
Relevant to HP Smart - Mobile
-- Beware –
Any HP application you install should be sourced from “HP”.
What? Fakes have been discovered on at least one Mobile App Store –
Check who is providing the application >> “HP Inc.”
If you can’t tell, ask or use the Homepage method to download and install the HP Smart application.
